  • When fuel cells were first suggested and discussed back in the nineteenth century, it was firmly hoped that distinctly higher efficiencies could be attained with them when converting the chemical energy of natural fuels to electric power. Now that the world supply of fossil fuels is seen to be finite, this hope turns into a need, into a question of maintaining advanced standards of life.

  • The EVI1 transcriptional repressor is critical to the normal development of a variety of tissues and participates in the progression of acute myeloid leu-kaemias. The repressor domain (Rp) was used to screen an adult human kidney yeast two-hybrid library and a novel binding partner designated ubiquitously expressed transcript (UXT) was isolated.

  • The two-hybrid method detects the interaction of two proteins by their ability to reconstitute the activity of a split transcription factor, thus allow-ing the use of a simple growth selection in yeast to identify new inter-actions. Since its introduction about 15 years ago, the assay largely has been applied to single proteins, successfully uncovering thousands of novel protein partners.

  • Hybrid materials based on tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), or hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with silver nanoparticles were synthesized. They were analyzed and characterized using differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry, atomic force microscopy, and static contact angle measurements.

  • Hydrogen fuel cells are one of the most promising alternatives to internal combustion engine hybrids and pure battery electric power for propelling passenger vehicles. Compared to internal combustion engine hybrid vehicles burning hydrocarbon fuels, fuel cell vehicles offer three primary advantages. First, the fuel cell system produces no tank-to-wheel carbon dioxide emissions and no other harmful emissions such as oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, or particulates. Second, the fuel cell system offers the potential for approximately 30% higher well-to-wheel energy efficiency.

  • With increasing energy demands, dwindling fossil energy resources, and environmental concerns associated with criteria pollutants and greenhouse gases, significant attention in the power generation community has been focused on increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. A highly efficient and low-emission concept is the fuel cell gas turbine (GT) hybrid. Hybrid systems are comprised of fuel cells integrated with a GT engine. A variety of potential configurations have been proposed and a number of cycles have been investigated.

  • Vehicles that utilize more than one energy source for propulsion are usually termed hybrid vehicles. Although the onboard energy storage system (ESS) may be a flywheel or a hydraulic accumulator, most hybrid vehicles use chemical batteries or capacitors and are termed hybrid-electric vehicles. Fuel cells (FCs) may be used in hybrid-electric vehicles as primary power sources instead of conventional internal combustion engines (ICEs). In this article, ICE–battery hybrid transit buses are discussed specifically and contrasted with conventional drive buses. ...

  • This article concerns the rationale, history, principal issues, and potential of fuel cell-powered rail vehicles. Issues include fuel cell type, hydrogen storage, special factors affecting fuel cell rail, and the question of which rail applications are appropriate for hybrid powertrains. It concludes with a brief discussion of a supersonic concept vehicle, a cross between a train and an airplane that operates in a hydrogen-filled tube and levitates on a gas film, thereby overcoming an inherent efficiency limitation of aircraft. ...

  • The design, construction and testing of valve-regulated lead/acid cells with grid designs optimised for high-rate partial state-of-charge cycling for hybrid electric vehicles are described. Computer modelling was used to develop the grid designs. This showed that designs with opposed tabs and terminals on the top and bottom of the cell were likely to have the best performance not only in terms of grid conductivity but also for uniformity.

  • Research shows that sensational news stories as well as popular romance novels often feature themes related to important topics in evolutionary psychology. In the first of four studies described in this paper we examined the song lyrics from three Billboard charts: Country, Pop, and R&B. A content analysis of the lyrics revealed 18 reproductive themes that read like an outline for a course in evolutionary psychology. Approximately 92% of the 174 songs that made it into the Top Ten in 2009 contained one or more reproductive messages, with an average of 10.49 reproductive...

  • Hybridomas are cells that have been engineered to produce a desired antibody in large amounts. To produce monoclonal antibodies, Bcells are removed from the spleen of an animal that has been challenged with the relevant antigen. These B-cells are then fused with myeloma tumor cells that can grow indefinitely in culture (myeloma is a B-cell cancer). This fusion is performed by making the cell membranes more permeable. The fused hybrid cells (called hybridomas), being cancer cells, will multiply rapidly and indefinitely and will produce large amounts of the desired antibodies.
