  • In Vietnam, lack of animal health information is considered a major challenge for pig production. The main objective of this study was to assess the seroprevalences of five pathogens [porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyo), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and leptospirosis] and to better characterize the farm movements through a survey.

  • Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonosis and has been recognized as a re-emerging infectious disease in humans and dogs, but prevalence of Leptospira shedding in dogs in Thailand is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine urinary shedding of Leptospira in dogs in Thailand, to evaluate antibody prevalence by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and to assess risk factors for Leptospira infection.

  • Leptospirosis is an endemic zoonosis in Brazil, with a great impact on human and animal health. Although dogs are frequently infected by pathogenic Leptospira, the current epidemiological understanding of canine leptospirosis is mainly based on serological tests that predict the infecting serogroup/serovar.

  • This study, we could conclude that there is a high prevalence of leptospirosis in the animal population in this district. For effective prevention of the disease, one must follow routine vaccination of pets, proper sanitation and waste disposal to control the rodent population that plays a major role in transmission of leptospirosis. The need for a modified vaccine for animals as well as humans including prevalent serovars of Leptospira is being highlighted.

  • Leptospirosis is an acute, bacterial, anthropozoonotic disease. Some occupations are highrisk group occupations for Leptospirosis e.g. field veterinarian, animal handler, dairy workers, slaughterhouse workers, rice field workers, sugar-cane field workers, sewage workers, and laboratory personnel. Poultry is known to be resistant to Leptospira spp. infection but the feed stuff available at poultry farms which are mostly located in the field attracts wild rodents. So it is important to study the prevalence of Leptospira spp.

  • Leptospirosis, a zoonosis caused by Leptospira, is recognized as an emergent infectious disease. In currently, the lack of adequate diagnostic tools, vaccines are an attractive intervention strategy. In this experiment, a 550 bp fragment of large ribosomal RNA gene (16S rRNA) was sequenced and constructed phylogenetic tree from a panel of six Vietnamese pathogenic strains of Leptospira spirochetes (e.g., Pomona, Canicola, Mitis, Ictero haemohagiae, Bataviae, and Grippotyphosa).

  • Serum samples from 126 clinically ailing goats showing signs like anorexia, fever, oligolactia, mastitis, icteric mucous membranes and abortion from different villages of Navsari, Surat, Tapi and Valsad districts of South Gujarat were examined for antileptospiral antibodies by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) using 17 serovars. Among screened goats, seropositivity was found to be 14.29 %. Seroreactivity was noted against serovars Hardjo, Canicola, Pomona, Pyrogenes, Bankinang, Grippotyphosa, Patoc1 and Australis. Female goats showed comparatively higher seropositivity than male goats.

  • Leptospirosis is zoonosis, presenting as a febrile illness with protean manifestations. Since disease is amenable to antibiotic therapy, early diagnosis helps in better management and prevention of complications. In many parts of our country, prevalence is either underestimated or unestimated. Hence this study was conducted with the objective of determining the seroprevalence of leptospirosis among clinically suspected cases, describe the various sociodemographic parameters, occupation and risk factors among seropositive cases.

  • A study was conducted to assess the prevalence of leptospirosis and prevalent serovars among goats in south Gujarat, India. A total of 459 serum samples were collected randomly from goats of different age groups and breeds of either sex. Goats were sampled from Navsari, Surat, Tapi, Valsad districts of south Gujarat. Sera were screened by Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) using seventeen antigens representing Leptospira sp. serovars. The result showed 25% (116/459) seropositivity among goats.

Hundred and eleven serum samples from 54 patients with clinical suspicion of leptospirosis and 50 serum from asymptomatic subjects was tested for IgM antibodies by the kits. Out of 54 serum collected, 42.59% were positive by ICT, 48.14% by ELISA, and 53.7% by MAT.

Leptopsira spp in bovine associated with infertility, abortion and reduced milk production. Recent seroepidemiology of leptopsirosis in bovine population by various workers in India suggest the upsurge in circulating antibodies against leptospira and emergence of new serovar. Present review addresses the issues in the epidemiology with special reference to India, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of leptospirosis in bovines.

  • Leptospirosis is one of the most widespread worldwide zoonotic occupational disease which is widely prevalent in various states of India, especially in Tamil Nadu. The mortality in severe disease ranges from 5-40%. Early diagnosis and treatment with appropriate antibiotics contributes to a reduction in the mortality rate. Hence this study was done with the objective of evaluating the usefulness of PCR in early diagnosis of human leptospirosis.

Sera samples collected from various farm animals (cattle- 331, goat-88, horses -9, dogs -10) from various parts of the country were examined by Microscopic agglutination test. A panel of 12 reference strains was used in the study. Out of the 438 samples, 27 samples showed agglutination for Leptospira antigens yielding an overall positivity of 6.16%. Study revealed that 6.34% cattle and 5.68% goat sera were positive for leptospiral antibodies.
