  • We investigate the effect of a corporate culture of sustainability on multiple facets of corporate behavior and performance outcomes. Using a matched sample of 180 companies, we find that corporations that voluntarily adopted environmental and social policies many years ago – termed as High Sustainability companies – exhibit fundamentally different characteristics from a matched sample of firms that adopted almost none of these policies – termed as Low Sustainability companies.

  • To preview the results, we nd that both capital inows and monetary policy shocks have a statistically signicant effect on real private credit, real residential investment and real house prices. Moreover, capital inows do not appear to be associated with inationary pressures or with substantial increases in output, suggesting that a central bank that follows a standard Taylor rule would see little reason to respond to these shocks.

  • This paper examines how the effort choices of workers within the same firm interact with each other. In contrast to the existing literature, we show that workers can affect the productivity of their co-workers based on income maximization considerations, rather than relying on behavioral considerations such as peer pressure, social norms, and shame. Theoretically, we show that a worker’s effort has a positive effect on the effort of co-workers if they are complements in production, and a negative effect if they are substitutes.
