  • Applications of mechanical engineering are found in the records of many ancient and medieval societies throughout the globe. In ancient Greece, the works of Archimedes (287 BC–212 BC) deeply influenced mechanics in the Western tradition and Heron of Alexandria (c. 10–70 AD) created the first steam engine.[2] In China, Zhang Heng (78–139 AD) improved a water clock and invented a seismometer, and Ma Jun (200–265 AD) invented a chariot with differential gears.

  • The steady increase in industrialization, urbanization and enormous population growth are leading to production of huge quantities of wastewaters that may frequently cause environmental hazards. Raw or treated waste water is very oft en discharged to freshwaters and results in changing ecological performance and biological diversity of these systems. About 70% of water supplied ends up as wastewater and several natural water reservoirs are being contaminated by untreated sewage/industrial effl uents. This makes waste water treatment and waste water reduction very important issues....

  • In 1968, after many years' experience in plant operations, I was appointed safety adviser to the heavy organic chemicals division (later the petrochemicals division) of Imperial Chemical Industries. My appointment followed a number of serious fires in the 1960s, and therefore I was mainly concerned with process hazards rather than those of a mechanical nature.

  • Construction is a heterogeneous sector that involves several fields of expertise and input from other industries. The construction industry is characterised by almost unique circumstances for each project and a dynamic unstructured environment, with safety hazards, several temporary activities and changing weather conditions. This combination of circumstances holds back the introduction of greater automation and robotization in the construction processes.

  • Soil erosion is a hazard traditionally associated with agriculture in tropical and semi-arid areas and is important for its long-term effects on soil productivity and sustainable agriculture. It is, however, a problem of wider significance occurring additionally on land devoted to forestry, transport and recreation. Erosion also leads to environmental damage through sedimentation, pollution and increased flooding. The costs associated with the movement and deposition of sediment in the landscape frequently outweigh those arising from the long-term loss of soil in eroding fields.

  • The atmosphere is the layer of air surrounding the earth and its structure below 50 km is most important in determining pollution levels. In this sense, greenhouse effect and climate change are evoking a special interest recently since they are considered to be human hazards. Greenhouse effect is produced by infrared radiations, imprisoned between the earth and the thin layer of greenhouse gases, which get reflected and heat up the earth’s surface.

  • Robotic Mechanisms During the last few decades, robot manipulators have been used primarily for repetitive operations and in hazardous environments. Typical applications include parts loading and unloading, radioactive material handling, space and undersea exploration, spot welding, spray painting, sealant application, and some simple component assembly. Recently, there is an increasing interest in making robots more intelligent and more user friendly. Thus, medical-surgery robots, household service robots, microrobots, and others are becoming available.
