Mechanical translation

This research is a practice led investigation of interactive computer artworks that incorporate physical and interactive aspects of pre-computer age mechanical devices. The research initially proceeds by looking at interactive productions, previously produced by John Lycette, in order to identify any relationship to mechanical devices or factors that have influenced this field of enquiry. It then documents a broad collection of the machines and mechanical objects in order to analyze them in terms of their: mechanics; visual and tactile form; and relationship with function.

The expression and activation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) is associated with cell transformation and tumor initiation, but the functional role and the mechanism whereby it drives immune cell infltration in breast cancer (BRCA) remain uncertain.

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (HNRNP) A1 and A2 are the most abundant HNRNPs with nearly identical functions, and play important roles in regulating gene expression at multiple levels (i.e. transcription, posttranscription, and translation). However, the expression and regulation mechanism of HNRNPA1 and A2 themselves remain unclear. In this study, the amino acid sequences of HNRNPA1 and HNRNPA2 were compared and found to have 78% and 86% homology in key functional domains.

The signaling properties of the gasotransmitter molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is endogenously generated in plant cells, are mainly observed during persulfidation, a protein post-translational modification (PTM) that affects redox-sensitive cysteine residues. There is growing experimental evidence that H2S in higher plants may function as a mechanism of response to environmental stress conditions.

The organization of DNA within eukaryotic cell nuclei poses special problems and opportunities for the cell. For example, assembly of DNA into chromatin is thought to be a principle mechanism by which adventitious general transcription is repressed. However, access to genomic DNA for events such as DNA repair must be facilitated by energy-intensive processes that either directly alter chromatin structure or impart post-translational modifications, leading to increased DNA accessibility.

Protein synthesis requires both amino acids, as precursors, and a substantial amount of metabolic energy. It is well established that starvation or lack of nutrients impairs pro-tein synthesis in mammalian cells and tissues. Branched chain amino acids are particularly effective in promoting protein synthesis. Recent work has revealed important new information about the mechanisms involved in these effects. Anumber of components of the translational machinery are regulated through signalling events that require the mam-malian target of rapamycin, mTOR. ...

The transcription factor hypoxia inducible factora-subunit (HIFa)is pivotal in the cellular response to the stress of hypoxia. Post-translational modification of HIFa by hydroxylase enzymes has recently been identified as a key oxygen sensing mechanism within the cell. The absence of the substrate oxygen prevents the hydroxylases from modi-fying HIFaduring hypoxia and allows dramatic up-regula-tion of both HIFaprotein stability and transcriptional activation capability.

The Sir2 family of histone⁄protein deacetylases (sirtuins) is comprised of homologues found across all kingdoms of life. These enzymes catalyse a unique reaction in which NAD + and acetylated substrate are converted into deacetylated product, nicotinamide, and a novel metabolite O-acetyl ADP-ribose. Although the catalytic mechanism is well conserved across Sir2 family members, sirtuins display differential specificity toward acetyl-ated substrates, which translates into an expanding range of physiological functions. ...

This paper describes the use of an on-line system to do word-sense ambiguity resolution and content analysis of English paragraphs, using a system of semantic analysis programmed in Q32 LISP 1.5. The system of semantic analysis comprises dictionary codings for the text words, coded forms of permitted message, and rules producing message forms in combination on the basis of a criterion of semantic closeness. All these can be expressed as a single system of rules of phrase-structure form.

Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 A stemming algorithm, a procedure to reduce all words with the same stem to a common form, is useful in many areas of computational linguistics and information-retrieval work. While the form of the algorithm varies with its application, certain linguistic problems are common to any stemming procedure.

This paper first presents a theoretical interpretation of the translation process. It then analyzes existing machine-translation research strategies and points out that some of the generally accepted principles of these strategies are not optimal. Finally, an alternative strategy is proposed, based on the author's theoretical position and research results.

The classifying of words according to syntactic usage is basic to language handling; this paper describes an algorithm for automatically classifying words according to thirteen commonly used parts of speech: noun, adjective, verb, past verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, interjection, present participle, past participle, auxiliary verb, and plural or collective noun.

Some considerations are presented regarding certain aspects of automatically translating Russian predicative infinitives into English. Emphasis is placed on the analysis (decoding) of the pertinent infinitive constructions in the source language rather than on the synthesis (encoding) of their equivalents in the target language.

This is a continuation of the authors' paper of the same title which appeared in Volume 8 of this journal. The present part extends the authors' definitions of prefix and suffix (in written English) to corpora of three-vowel-string words, and implements them on a corpus K consisting of 19,329 graphemically distinct three-vowel-string words from the Shorter Oxford Dictionary.
