Prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) plays a central role in controlling molting, metamorphosis, and diapause termination in insects by stimulating the prothoracic glands to synthesize and release the molting hormone, ecdysone. Using Autographa californicanucleopolyhedrovirus (AcNPV)-mediated transient gene transfer into the central nervous sytem (CNS) of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, we identified two cis-regulatory elements that participate in the decision and the enhancement ofPTTHgene expression in PTTH-producing neurosecretory cells (PTPCs). ...

The steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) initiates insect molting and metamorphosis through binding with a heterodimer of two nuclear recep-tors, the ecdysone receptor (EcR) and ultraspiracle (USP). Expression of the specific isoforms EcR-A and EcR-B1 governs steroid-induced responses in the developing cells of the silkworm Bombyx mori.

Juvenile hormone controls the timing of insect metamorphosis. As a final step of juvenile hormone biosynthesis, juvenile hormone acid O-methyl-transferase (JHAMT) transfers the methyl group from S-adenosyl-l-methi-onine to the carboxyl group of farnesoic acid and juvenile hormone acid.

Jumonji (Jmj) is a transcriptional repressor that plays important roles in the suppression of cell proliferation and development of various tissues in the mouse. To further clarify the roles of Jmj during development and gain insight into mechanisms of Jmj-mediated transcriptional regulation, we have taken advantage ofDrosophilaas a model organism.

Changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential play a key role in deter-mining cell fate. Mitochondria membrane hyperpolarization has been found to occur after cell activation, e.g. in lymphocytes, whereas depolar-ization is associated with apoptosis.

Polcalcins such as Bet v 4 and Phl p 7 are pollen allergens that are con-structed from EF-hand motifs, which are very common and well character-ized helix–loop–helix motifs with calcium-binding functions, as elementary building blocks. Being members of an exceptionally well-characterized protein superfamily, these allergens highlight the fundamental challenge in explaining what features distinguish allergens from nonallergenic proteins.
