The objective of this project was to develop \(Ti{O_2}\) based multifunctional substrates through silver decoration, while simultaneously enhancing the photocatalytic performance of \(Ti{O_2}\) in the substrate. Employing Ag nanoparticles introduced additional functionality to the system, namely surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), thus enabling the detection of trace amounts of organic molecules prior to their degradation, all with the same substrate.

Kininogens are multifunctional proteins found so far mainly in mammals. They carry vasoactive kinins as well as participate in defense, blood coagulation and the acute phase response. In this study, novel kininogens were isolated from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) and spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) by papain-affinity chromatography. The molecular mass of cod kininogen determined by MALDITOF mass spectrometry to be 51.0 kDa and it had pI values of 3.6, 3.9 and 4.4.

Two genes (CM-AAT1 and CM-AAT2) with strong sequence homology (87% identity at the protein level) putatively involved in the formation of aroma volatile esters have been isolated from Charentais melon fruit. They belong to a large and highly divergent family of multifunctional plant acyl-transferases and show at most 21% identity to the only other fruit acyl-transferase characterized so far in strawberry. RT-PCR studies indicated that both genes were specifically expressed in fruit at increasing rates in the early and mid phases of ripening.

Zinc (Zn), an endogenous regulator of apoptosis, and has abilitiesboth to induceapoptosis and inhibit the inductionof apoptosis via the modulation of caspase activity. Due to the multifunctions of Zn, the intracellular Zn level is strictly regulated by a complex system in physiological and patho-logical conditions. The commitment of Zn to the regulation of apoptosis is not fully understood. In the present study, we investigated the role of intracellular Zn level in the induction of apoptosis in human leukemia cells (HL-60 cells) using a Zn ionophore [pyrithione (Py)]....

GlutathioneS-transferases (EC 2.5.1.18) (GSTs), are a family of multifunctional enzymes present in all living organisms whose main function is the detoxification of electrophilic compounds. GSTs are considered the most prominent detoxifying class II enzymes in helminths. We describehere the characterizationof novel dehydroascorbate reductase and thiol transferase activities that reside in the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni GSTx.

Gelsolin is a multidomain and multifunction protein that nucleates the assembly of filaments and severs them. The activation of gelsolin by calcium is a multistep process involving many calcium binding sites that act to unfold the molecule from a tight structure to a more loose form in which three actin-binding sites become exposed. Low pHis alsoknowntoactivategelsolin, in theabsenceof calciumand this too results in an unfolding of the molecule.

RNA helicase II⁄Guais a multifunctional nucleolar protein involved in ribosomal RNA processing inXenopus laevisoocytes and mammalian cells. Downregulation of Guausing small interfering RNA (siRNA) in HeLa cells resulted in 80% inhibition of both 18S and 28S rRNA production. The mechanisms underlying this effect remain unclear. Here we show that in mammalian cells, Guaphysically interacts with ribosomal protein L4 (RPL4), a component of 60S ribosome large subunit.

Interleukin (IL)-11 is a multifunctional cytokine that stimulates hematopoi-etic progenitor cells and exerts a series of important immunomodulatory effects. It was believed to be restricted to mammals, but here we report the first nonmammalianIL-11 gene, in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). A trout IL-11 cDNA clone was isolated that contains a 5¢-untranslated region (UTR) of 400 bp, an open reading frame of 612 bp and a large 3¢-UTR of 1924 bp.

Human kynurenine aminotransferase I/glutamine trans-aminase K (hKAT-I) is an important multifunctional enzyme. This study systematically studies the substrates of hKAT-I and reassesses the effects of pH, Tris, amino acids anda-keto acids on the activity of the enzyme. The experi-ments were comprised of functional expression of the hKAT-I in an insect cell/baculovirus expression system, purification of its recombinant protein, and functional characterization of the purified enzyme.

The properties of theD6 desaturase/acetylenase from the mossCeratodon purpureusand theD12 acetylenase from the dicotCrepis alpinawere studied by expressing the encoding genes inArabidopsis thalianaandSaccharomyces cerevisiae. The acetylenase fromC. alpinaD12 desaturated both oleate and linoleate with about equal efficiency. The desaturation of oleate gave rise to 9(Z),12(E)- and 9(Z),12(Z)-octadeca-dienoates in a ratio of approximately 3 : 1.

Lactoferrin (Lf), a multifunctional molecule present in mammalian secretions and blood, plays important roles in host defense and cancer. Indeed, Lf has been reported to inhibit the proliferation of cancerous mammary gland epi-thelial cells and manifest a potent antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus and human cytomegalo-virus. The Lf-binding sites on the cell surface appear to be proteoglycans and other as yet undefined protein(s).
