  • A user may typically need to combine the strengths of more than one system in order to perform a task. In this paper, we describe a component of the Janus natural language interface that translates intensional logic expressions representing the meaning of a request into executable code for each application program, chooses which combination of application systems to use, and designs the transfer of data among them in order to provide an answer.

  • High data rate wireless communications links with transmission rates nearing 1 Gigabit/second (will quantify a “bit” shortly) Provide high speed links that still offer good Quality of Service (QoS) (will be quantified mathematically). Theoretically, the 1Gbps barrier can be achieved using this configuration if you are allowed to use much power and as much BW as you so please! Extensive research has been done on SISO under power and BW constraints. A combination a smart modulation, coding and multiplexing techniques have yielded good results but far from the 1Gbps barrier...

  • W hat makes for a good health system? What makes a health system fair? And how do we know whether a health system is performing as well as it could? These questions are the subject of public debate in most countries around the world. Naturally, answers will depend on the perspective of the respondent.

  • I have seen students put in small groups to measure the ra- dius and circumference of circle after circle, then discuss finding in their small groups, write up their findings, share with the class, and then have the teacher acknowledge the existence of π (as a constant ratio of circumference to diameter).

  • Because of accessibility and the risk of involvement of bony struc- tures, treatment with radiotherapy can lead to radionecrosis of the mandible or maxilla. Moreover, oral cavity squamous cell carcino- mas may be less sensitive to chemotherapy and radiation, relative to oropharyngeal or laryngeal cancers. Thus, primary treatment for most tumors is surgical. Positive surgical margins, multiple involved lymph nodes, and/or extracapsular tumor extension call for consid- eration of postoperative chemoradiotherapy, to improve local dis- ease control....

  • We show that the class of string languages generated by linear context-free rewriting systems is equal to the class of output languages of deterministic treewalking transducers. From equivalences that have previously been established we know that this class of languages is also equal to the string languages generated by context-free hypergraph grammars, multicomponent tree-adjoining grammars, and multiple contextfree grammars and to the class of yields of images of the regular tree languages under finite-copying topdown tree transducers. ...

  • The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), defined in RFC 1771, allows you to create loop free interdomain routing between autonomous systems. An autonomous system is a set of routers under a single technical administration. Routers in an AS can use multiple interior gateway protocols to exchange routing information inside the AS and an exterior gateway protocol to route packets outside the AS.

  • The grim picture of women’s health, including maternal mortality and HIV, has many causal factors, and solutions are to be found in multiple sectors. However, many of these solutions are mediated through and require the presence of strong and effective local health systems. This level of care, defined in many countries as the “district health system,” embraces the contin- uum of care reaching from the household/community level up through the first referral facility level, to the district hospital.

  • The mutual fund data come from the 1998 CRSP Survivor Bias FreeMutual Fund Database. Our initial sample contains 2,609 domestic equity mutual funds. We exclude multiple share classes for the same fund as well as funds with only a year or less of available returns. The initial sample is used to obtain the values of the prior parameters in the empirical Bayes pro- cedure mentioned previously.

  • There are two papillary muscles associated with the mitral valve (Fig. 3) When looking from the atrial side, the anterolateral is to the left and the posteromedial is to the right. The muscles are located under their respective commissures. They originate from the lower third of the left ventricular free wall. The papillary muscles are extensions of the ventricular muscle from which they originate. The chords originate from the fibrous tips of these muscles, extending to insert on the mitral leaflets.

  • This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the underlying theory, design techniques and analytical tools of wireless communications, focusing primarily on the core principles of wireless system design. The book begins with an overview of wireless systems and standards. The characteristics of the wireless channel are then described, including their fundamental capacity limits. Various modulation, coding, and signal processing schemes are then discussed in detail, including state-of-the-art adaptive modulation, multicarrier, spread spectrum, and multiple antenna techniques....

  • MULTIPLE ACCESS IN GSM AND (E)GPRS This chapter discusses features of the GSM air interface from phase 1 recommendations through to the specifications released in 1999. This entails GSM voice, circuit-switched data, and High Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD) services. A key topic is the matter of radio resource utilisation, hence on top of summarising the relevant system features, we present also some research results dealing with resource utilisation under heterogeneous GSM and HSCSD traffic load....

  • Autoimmune disease represents a group of more than 60 different chronic autoimmune diseases that affect approximately 6% of the population. It is the third major category of illness in the United States and many industrialized countries, following heart disease and cancer. Autoimmune diseases arise when one’s immune system actively targets and destroys self tissue resulting in clinical disease. Common examples include Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.

  • The unearned premium reserve may have multiple roles under a deferral-matching accounting system. It may be viewed as a reflection of the refund liability in the event of policy cancellation10 . It may also be viewed as a way of deferring revenue so that revenue timing matches expense. These two views may result in different values, such as when a penalty would be charged the policyholder for early policy cancellation, although in practice such differences are generally ignored.

  • Morphological processes in Semitic languages deliver space-delimited words which introduce multiple, distinct, syntactic units into the structure of the input sentence. These words are in turn highly ambiguous, breaking the assumption underlying most parsers that the yield of a tree for a given sentence is known in advance. Here we propose a single joint model for performing both morphological segmentation and syntactic disambiguation which bypasses the associated circularity.
