Chemical substances (also called pure substances) may well be defined as "any material with a definite chemical composition" in an introductory general chemistry textbook.[2] According to this definition a chemical substance can either be a pure chemical element or a pure chemical compound. But, there are exceptions to this definition; a pure substance can also be defined as a form of matter that has both definite composition and distinct properties.[3] The chemical substance index published by CAS also includes several alloys of uncertain composition.

Outside of Chicago’s City Hall is a giant Picasso sculpture of a weeping woman. For the more artistically challenged, it takes quite a while before you can “see” it, before you can really make out what Picasso was getting at and how he got there. Five miles to the south of City Hall, in the basement of the University of Chicago’s Chemistry Department, lies a piece of glassware of which the great artist would have been proud. Again to the uninitiated, it takes quite a while to “see” it. It looks like a deranged spider; indeed, those who work with it call it the Tarantula.

There are many classes of green bonds that have been issued or proposed, and they have taken on a confusing plethora of names such as green gilts, green retail bonds, green investment bank bonds, green infrastructure bonds, 46 multilateral development bank green bonds, green corporate bonds, green sectoral bonds, rainforest bonds and index-linked carbon bonds. One class of green bonds that has attracted attention recently is the climate bond, which is a type of green bond issued to raise capital for investments in projects which specifically mitigate or adapt to climate change.

Nomenclature: The terms active agent and pharmacon designate substances that are capable of modifying life processes irrespective of whether the effects elicited may benefit or harm the organisms concerned. By this definition, a toxin is also a pharmacon. Taken in a narrower sense, a pharmacon means a substance that is used for therapeutic purposes. An unequivocal term for such a substance is medicinal drug.

The universal UDF in this case is called SAS_SCORE. This UDF is slightly different in that it can take a table or result set name as input, and the output is a result set. Call this a table UDF (compared to a scalar UDF like SAS_PUT UDF, which outputs a single value). The input parameter list of the SAS_SCORE UDF varies according to the DBMS and the model being executed. Regardless, the input parameter list of SAS_SCORE can be broken into two sets: the name of the scoring function to be run and the table or result set containing the...

In the mid-1990’s catastrophe bonds (CAT bonds), also named as Act of God or Insurance-linked bond, were developed to ease the transfer of catastrophe based insurance risk from insurers, reinsurers and corporations (sponsors) to capital market investors. CAT bonds are bonds whose coupons and principal payments depend on the performance of a pool or index of natural catastrophe risks, or on the presence of specified trigger conditions.

If we multiply the price-earnings estimate of Sloan (1936), which is equal to 17.5, by 1929 total NIPA earnings, we get an estimate for the market value of all corporations in late August/early September of 1929 of 1.54 times GNP (= 30.8/1.76 × 8.8). We can use the same procedure with companies in the S&P indices. In Table 2, we provide a list of the 50 companies in the S&P industrial index, the 20 companies in the S&P index of railroads and the 20 companies in the S&P index of public utilities. The 90 are the stocks in their composite index. Along with names, we report...

While this narrative was probably one of the last actual accounts of the site before it was backfilled, it is reminiscent of the dramatic accounts given by those elite- minded tourists on the Grand Tour. The truth of the matter is that an excavation was conducted by Gennaro Matrone under the supervision of archaeologists who published the results of the excavation in 1901 and 1902. Both of the excavations yielded numer- ous objects that were dispersed to museums throughout the United States and Naples, Italy.

This paper suggests the efficient indexing method based on a concept vector space that is capable of representing the semantic content of a document. The two information measure, namely the information quantity and the information ratio, are defined to represent the degree of the semantic importance within a document. The proposed method is expected to compensate the limitations of term frequency based methods by exploiting related lexical items. Furthermore, with information ratio, this approach is independent of document length. ...

The principle known as 'free indexation' plays an important role in the determination of the referential properties of noun phrases in the principleand-parameters language framework. First, by investigating the combinatorics of free indexation, we show that the problem of enumerating all possible indexings requires exponential time. Secondly, we exhibit a provably optimal free indexation algorithm. In (1), the pronominal "him" can be interpreted as being coreferential with "John", or with some other person not named in (1), but not with "Bill". ...
