  • What is the nature of Nature? Is it harmonious and graceful? Is it divine and providential? Is it cruel and wild? These days, answers to the question 'What is the nature of Nature?' often reverberate with claims of natural unity: every living thing in nature, and this includes humanity, is united. The unity of nature idea appears in many different forms; in the speeches of environmentally conscious politicians, in the academic writings of scientists, in the sermons of theological leaders, and in the slogans of social activists.

  • As I write this Introduction, President George W. Bush is on his first visit to Europe since taking office. A few days ago, speaking to European heads of state in Gothenburg, he explained why he was refusing to ratify the Kyoto agreement on climate change. The concept dominated Renaissance thought, where its literary equivalent, poetic justice, underpinned much of the period's creative writing. R. S. White's study examines a wide range of Renaissance texts, by More, Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare and Milton, in the light of these developing ideas of Natural Law.

  • The idea of restoration is not new. Life, as it happens, is full of accidents, mishaps, and untoward events, from breaking a tool to growing old and dying, and the desire to avoid the consequences of these events by reversing or undoing them in order to return to some happier previous or “original” condition seems to be as old as our species. It is the root aspiration behind religion, that oldest of human institutions. It is also a constant theme of both public and private life, and it may even be grounded in the capacity for self-repair that is a peculiarity of life itself....

  • This paper presents an efficient inference algorithm of conditional random fields (CRFs) for large-scale data. Our key idea is to decompose the output label state into an active set and an inactive set in which most unsupported transitions become a constant. Our method unifies two previous methods for efficient inference of CRFs, and also derives a simple but robust special case that performs faster than exact inference when the active sets are sufficiently small. We demonstrate that our method achieves dramatic speedup on six standard natural language processing problems. ...

This awareness has been heightened by concerns about resource scarcity, environmental degradation, and global environmental issues.
