The process of neural stem cell (NSC) differentiation into neurons is crucial for the development of potential cell-centered treatments for central nervous system disorders. However, predicting, identifying, and anticipating this differentiation is complex. In this study, we propose the implementation of a convolutional neural network model for the predictable recognition of NSC fate, utilizing single-cell brightfield images.

We recently reported that intermittent hypoxia facilitated the proliferation of neural stem⁄progenitor cells (NPCs) in the subventricule zone and hip-pocampusin vivo. Here, we demonstrate that hypoxia promoted the prolif-eration of NPCsin vitro and that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1a, which is one of the key molecules in the response to hypoxia, was critical in this process.

Neural induction is a complex process and the detailed mechanism of FGF-induced neurogenesis remains unclear. Methods: By using a serum-free neural induction method, we showed that FGF1 dose-dependently promoted the induction of Sox1/N-cadherin/nestin triple positive cells, which represent primitive neuroblasts, from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. Results: We demonstrated that FGF1, FGF2, and FGF4, but not FGF8b, enhanced this neurogenesis. Especially, FGFenhanced neurogenesis is not mediated through the rescue of the apoptosis or the enhancement of the proliferation of Sox1+ cells.
