  • Turcicum leaf blight (TLB) or Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) is a ubiquitous foliar disease of corn (maize) caused by Exserohilum turcicum, the anamorph of the ascomycete Setosphaeria. The TLB fungus survives through the winter on infected maize residue at the soil surface. As temperatures rise in the spring and early summer, the fungus produces spores on residue, and then the spores are splashed or wind-blown onto leaves of the new maize crop. Infection occurs during periods of moderate (64° to 81°F), wet and humid weather.

  • Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB or NLB) caused by Exserohilum turcicum is a common disease of maize in many parts of the world including India. Resistance to NCLB is complexly inherited and controlled by several quantitative trait loci (QTL) distributed across the genome. Phenotype as well as linked DNA marker based selection for resistance to NCLB is expected to be effective. Hence an investigation was carried out involving a total of 569 F2:3 families derived from two crosses viz., PH234 X PHBP3 and PH234 X PH84K, where PH234 is resistant parent and PHBP3 and PH84K are susceptible parents.

  • The present investigation was conducted to understand the genetics of resistance to northern leaf blight in maize through six generation mean analysis in three crosses viz., PH234 X PH84K, PHM6M X PH17H and PHM6M X PHY0Z during kharif 2016-17. The scaling tests and joint scaling tests indicated the inadequacy of additive-dominance model and showed the presence of epistatic gene effects in all the three crosses for northern leaf blight.

  • The present investigation was carried out in crop season of Rabi 2013 with the wheat variety of Pusa 402. Leaf blight of wheat is an important disease of wheat in northern and eastern region of India. Use of Fungicide and bioagent can be minimized by the integrated approach towards the management of plant diseases. Treatment of foliar spray with propiconazole @500 ml/ha was found best for reduce disease intensity, higher shoot length, root length, root weight, shoot weight, number of tiller, yield/ha.

The morphological and molecular screening of maize genotypes for resistance against turcicum leaf blight is very crucial in maize crop improvement programme.   • Among fungicides treated plots the grain and fodder yield of maize were significantly higher and disease severity is minimum than control. Among tested fungicide minimum disease severity (18.15%), maximum grain yield (38.71 q/ha) and fodder yield (182.75 q/ha) was recorded in azoxystrobin 18.2% + difenoconazole 11.4% SC followed by tebuconazole 25.9 EC and hexaconazole 5 SC. Least effective fungicide is azoxystrobin 23 SC with 25.71%, 23.77 and 90.29 q/ha of disease severity, grain yield and fodder yield, respectively.
