  • This book is intended as a general introduction to modern physics for science and engineering students. It is written at a level which presurnes a prior tull year’s course in classical physics, and a knowledge of elementary differential and integral calculus. The material discussed here includes probability, relativity, quantum mechanics, atomic physics, statistical mechanics, nuclear physics and elementary particles.

  • The objective of this manual is to improve the international exchange of scientific information. The recommendations made to achieve this end come under three general headings. The first is the use of quantity calculus for handling physical quantities, and the general rules for the symbolism of quantities and units, described in chapter 1. The second is the use of internationally agreed symbols for the most frequently used quantities, described in chapter 2.

  • Just as you usually use a pound or so of apples to bake your average pie or several tons of steel to build a suburban office park, in electronics, some things just naturally come in small measurements and others in large measurements. That means that you typically see certain combinations of prefixes and units over and over.

  • The exact relations between science and technology in particular have been debated by scientists, historians, and policymakers in the late 20th century, in part because the debate can inform the funding of basic and applied science. In the immediate wake of World War II, for example, in the United States it was widely considered that technology was simply "applied science" and that to fund basic science was to reap technological results in due time.

  • Vector notation and vector addition Graphical: a scalar multiplies an arrow. Indicate a vector’s direction by drawing an arrow with direction indicated by marked angles or slopes. The scalar multiple with a nearby scalar symbol, say F, as shown in figure 2.8b. This means F times a unit vector in the direction of the arrow. (Because F might be negative, sign confusion is common amongst beginners. Please see sample 2.1.) Combined: graphical representation used to define a symbolic vector.

  • Next, we can modify our model to account for different firm sizes. For notational convenience and ease of exposition, we have used a continuum model. A firm hires a unit mass of consumers. The size of the firm then becomes a normalization and hence has no bearing on the dynamics and steady-state properties. In practice, firms hire a finite number of workers, and the law of large number becomes a poor approximation when the firm is small. Even when a small firm draws from the same work force as any other firm, the variance of workers’ health-care cost may be larger. The most convenient way to...

  • Figures and Tables The notation on figures must correspond to that used in the text. There must not be information on figures which is not discussed in the text. Units on diagrams must be SI. Old diagrams with non-SI units must be redrawn. Any diagrams obtained from the literature must be acknowledged even though they may have been redrawn, especially if the intellectual content of the diagram is not significantly modified. Quantities plotted are dimensionless, so they should be divided by the units on the axis legends......

  • THE CAMBRIDGE Language Research Unit is primarily concerned with analytic investigation of language, and in particular with a correlative study of the descriptive-linguistic, logical, algebraic and other notational characteristics of natural languages and of translation between natural languages. Much of this work is relevant to machine translation and the following four sections by members of the unit illustrate some of the applications that are being made.
