  • By using the transfer matrix method (TMM) and numerical simulations, the designs of the sensor based on silicon waveguides are optimized and demonstrated in detail. We applied our structure to detect glucose and ethanol concentrations simultaneously. A high sensitivity of 9000 nm/RIU, detection limit of 2x10-4 for glucose sensing and sensitivity of 6000nm/RIU, detection limit of 1.3x10-5 for ethanol sensing are achieved.

  • The shipping industry is both special and fascinating. It is special, above all, because of its truly global nature, the huge discrete investments needed, the highly cyclical markets at play, and the unique competitive structure, with many determined players. It is fascinating, above all, because fortunes are made—and lost—at a fast pace, with some of the most risk-willing owners also serving as decision makers. This book is the result of at least seven forces that have shaped my interest in shipping corporations and their strategies. The first is purely personal.

  • The job description is to the job what the foundation is to the house. Every structure begins at the bottom with a strong foundation on which to build. Like a structure’s foundation, a wellwritten job description can be used as the basis to establish and build the expectations of the job. When writing a job description you lay the groundwork for a particular job and for your relationship with the person you hire to do the work.

  • Another of the initial ideas had the welcome mat track the motion of people across it and respond to this in some way. This was first tried using amat with electric-field-sensing electrodes and a projected im- age that followed the path of the person walking across it. Issues of robustness for this tracking method caused this idea to be dropped as well.

  • Development of the case studies was based on literature review and interviews with persons inside and outside EPA. The number of interviewees per case study varied roughly from a half dozen to a dozen. There was an effort to ensure balance in the group of respondents for any particular case study, but because of the relatively small number of respondents and the non-random nature of the selection process, extreme caution should be taken in interpreting the numerical response summaries that are reported.

  • When instructions within a program are executed one after the other sequentially that program is said to have a linear structure. Decision making after examining all available options is very important in life as well as in programming. For example, it is the law that all males 18 or older should register with the selective service. If you are writing a program to send out reminders to enforce this law, the decision to send the letter should be based on if a person is male and if he is 18 or older. In this chapter you will learn how to...
