  • Care for pregnant women differs fundamentally from most other medical endeavours. ‘Routine’ care during pregnancy and birth interferes in the lives of healthy people, and in a process which has the potential to be an important life experience. It is diffi cult to measure the extent to which our efforts may, for example, disturb the development of a confi dent, nurturing relationship between mother and baby. The harmful effects we measure in randomised trials are limited to those we have predicted may occur.

  • Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy: Treatment Pregnancy complicated by diabetes mellitus is associated with higher maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates. Preconception counseling and treatment are important for the diabetic patient contemplating pregnancy and can reduce the risk of congenital malformations and improve pregnancy outcome. Folate supplementation reduces the incidence of fetal neural tube defects, which occur with greater frequency in fetuses of diabetic mothers.

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding may be caused by: hormonal factors, complications of pregnancy, systemic diseases, endometrial abnormalities (polyps), uterine or cervical problems (leiomyomas), or cancer. The pattern of abnormal bleeding is often very helpful in determining the etiology; thus, a number of terms differentiate the various types of abnormal uterine bleeding. Menorrhagia (hypermenorrhea) is prolonged or heavy menstrual flow that may be further complicated by clots.

  • The only bleeding that normally occurs during late pregnancy is a very small amount ( 15 mL), with loss of the mucous plug prior to delivery. All other bleeding is abnormal and merits investigation. A useful list of the causes of third trimester bleeding is contained in Table 11-1. The health care provider must distinguish between obstetric and nonobstetric bleeding (the two major classifications). Nonobstetric causes are much less common in pregnancy and generally are less hazardous. Of the obstetric causes, various forms of placental bleeding account for the vast majority.

  • as mentioned, sexual and reproductive health is a unique sub-sector, due to its close association with important and sensitive socio-cultural factors and gender roles which define and prescribe appropriate opportunities and avenues of action. the field is uniquely sensitive and therefore must involve explicit exploration across all areas of activity of some critical cross cutting issues – among them gender, adolescent health, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDs.

  • Receptors for the key female reproductive hormones, estrogens, are found throughout the entire brain including prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, neocortex, hippocampus, amygdala, striatum, and brain stem. The neurotransmitter systems involved in depression (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, cetylcholine, GABA, glutamate) are regulated by the action of estrogen. Research suggests that women may have increased susceptibility to depression and mood disorders during two key lifecycle transitions: pregnancy and the postpartum period, and perimenopause.

  • Vitrification has been investigated for tissue-engineered bone and blood vessels. Liu & McGrath (2003) explored the potential of vitrification for the cryopreservation of tissueengineered bone constructs consisting of a hydroxyapatite scaffold-cell complex. Cell survival was 92.0% for suspended cells and 43.0% for attached cells. In terms of tissueengineered blood vessel constructs, the effects of vitrification and conventional cryopreservation were compared (Elder et al., 2005). Collagen-based vascular constructs were used as models in this study.

  • Results from the univariate analysis of prostate cancer mortality and incidence do not take into account the effect of different covariables, which might influence the SMR and SIR. Various covariables where considered to model longitudinal effects: age, calendar year, year of immigration, length of stay in Germany; cohort was considered for the analysis of mortality. Multivariate Poisson regression did not show any significant effect of the considered covariables on mortality (data not shown).

  • Ensuring universal access to SRH services and information is essential for achieving many, if not all, of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially those on maternal health, child survival, HIV and AIDS and gender equality [5]. Most maternal deaths can be prevented if there is skilled attendance at birth to cope with potentially fatal complications. Access to safe and effective family planning services and contraception empowers women to have more control over when to have children and lessens the incidence of unsafe abortions.

The broad field of medicine changes rapidly, with constantly occurring new breakthroughs, approaches, and recommendations. The area of medical disorders in pregnancy encompasses a broad range of diseases; a woman may have a long-term chronic disorder that can have major implications for undertaking a pregnancy. Yet, other medical conditions are unique to pregnancy but also influence gestational outcomes.

  • Currently, cryopreservation is the only available strategy for the storage of tissueengineered products. However, tissue-engineered products usually consist of multiple layers of cells and, in most cases, the cells are seeded on scaffold made of biomaterials, which complicates the development of efficient freezing storage protocols (Pancrazio et al., 2007). Furthermore, the scale-up of cryopreservation procedures from the cellular level to a macroscopic tissue scale introduces new problems related to heat and mass transfer phenomena in larger systems (Karlsson and Toner, 1996)....

  • Assessing nutrient status of animals. After registration, the animal’s daily feed intake, daily milk yield and milk fat percent are recorded. In addition, the animal’s body weight is also record- ed. Based on milk yield, milk fat percent, body weight and the pregnancy status, the animal’s nutrient requirement is computed by the software. Considering the prevailing feeding practices (feed intake), consumption of nutrients, e.g. energy (TDN; total digestible nutrients), protein, calcium and phosphorus is assessed.

  • Nutrient deficiencies were reported in infants born to women who underwent procedures that resulted in malabsorption, as well as women who did not take prenatal vitamins or had difficulty with their own nutrition (i.e., from chronic vomiting). Literature suggests that gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable band procedures confer only minimal, if any, increased risk of nutritional or congenital problems if supplemental vitamins are taken and maternal nutrition is otherwise adequate. Biliopancreatic diversion has an appreciable risk for nutritional problems in some patients.
