  • Prison policies often overlook the special needs of women and their health. Many women in prison have high levels of mental illness and drug or alcohol dependence as well as histories of sexual and physical abuse and violence. Issues arising from gender-specific health care needs and family responsibilities are also frequently neglected. Although women represent a small percentage of the total prison population, their numbers are increasing and the rate of increase is much greater than that of men. ...

  • Although women are a minority in national prison populations all over the world, the female prison population is increasing. This increase in women’s imprisonment is part of a global trend towards the increasing popularity and use of imprisonment and a corresponding under- use of constructive alternative, non-custodial sanctions. This applies particularly to drug offences and non-violent theft (Penal Reform International, 2007).

  • In January 2005 Peg McQueary nicked her ankle while shaving. It was a tiny cut, but that little opening in her skin provided a perfect entry point for dangerous bacteria. Two weeks later McQueary developed a pus-filled boil on her ankle. Shortly thereafter, her leg swelled to three times its normal size. It was hot, tender, and painful. McQueary went to see her doctor. He rushed her to the hospital, where she was intravenously administered vancomycin, a powerful antibiotic. It took more than a month for Mc- Queary’s leg to heal....

Nevertheless, TB control remains a public health priority for correctional systems, since TB outbreaks continue to occur in U.S. jails and prisons. Furthermore, a significant proportion of TB cases in the U.S. occur among persons who are over-represented in certain jails or prisons, including racial/ethnic minority populations, persons with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and persons born in foreign countries that have high rates of TB. • Living in the present days of peace and tranquillity it is difficult to picture the life of our ancestors in the days of King Alfred, when the whole country was for years overrun by hordes of pagan barbarians, who slaughtered, plundered, and destroyed at will. You may gain, perhaps, a fair conception of the state of things if you imagine that at the time of the great mutiny the English population of India approached that of the natives, and that the mutiny was everywhere triumphant.

The population would be grow poorer by the day. The state would be unleashed to crush political dissent and lock everyone into a national prison. None of the ideals would be achieved.

  • The health status of prisoners is generally much poorer than that of the general population, and women’s health needs can be seriously neglected in a male-dominated prison system. Many women in prison have a background of physical and sexual abuse and of alcohol and drug dependence. Many did not receive adequate health care before incarceration. Women in prison generally have more mental health problems than women in the general population. This frequently stems from prior victimization.

  • Everything was perfectly swell. There were no prisons, no slums, no insane asylums, no cripples, no poverty, no wars. All diseases were conquered. So was old age. Death, barring accidents, was an adventure for volunteers. The population of the United States was stabilized at forty-million souls. One bright morning in the Chicago Lying-in Hospital, a man named Edward K. Wehling, Jr., waited for his wife to give birth. He was the only man waiting. Not many people were born a day any more.
