  • Electrophoresis is defined as the transport of electrically charged particles in a direct current electric field. Electrophoretic separation is based on differential rates of migration in the bulk of the liquid phase and is not concerned with reactions occurring at the electrodes. In the early days, electrophoresis was carried out either in free solution or in the supporting media such as paper, cellulose acetate, starch, agarose, and polyacry lamide gel.

  • Biomedical research has entered a new era of characterizing a disease or a protein on a global scale. In the post-genomic era, Proteomics now plays an increasingly important role in dissecting molecular functions of proteins and discovering biomarkers in human diseases. Mass spectrometry, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and high-density antibody and protein arrays are some of the most commonly used methods in the Proteomics field.

  • The collected Chapters in this volume describe the current status of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification of proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides and small molecule drugs, the recent advances in conjugation chemistry, and new clinical products. The book provides an excellent update in this rapidly evolving field, and the comprehensive collection of Chapters complements well past reviews/volumes that have documented the evolution of PEGylation. For example, a reader new to this field is encouraged to gain the historical perspective by reading the following reviews [1–8].

  • LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) is a very popular CE detector – These have ~0.01 attomole sensitivity for fluorescent molecules (e.g. derivatized proteins). Direct absorbance (UV-Vis) can be used for organics. For inorganics, indirect absorbance methods are used instead, where a absorptive buffer (e.g. chromate) is displaced by analyte ions – Detection limits are in the 50-500 ppb range. Alternative methods involving potentiometric and conductometric detection are also used – Potentiometric detection: a broad-spectrum ISE – Conductometric detection: like IC...

  • The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus both maintain their specific morphology, composition, and function in spite of the exchange of proteins and lipids between the two organelles through membrane trafficking. The morphology of the Golgi apparatus is closely linked to the balance between anterograde (ER-to-Golgi) and retrograde (Golgi-to-ER) transport. It has been reported that the inhibition of anterograde transport leads to the redistribution of Golgi components to the cytoplasm or the ER (Storrie et al., 1998; Ward et al., 2001; Miles et al., 2001).

  • The gold standard of assessing liver fibrosis is liver biopsy, which is invasive and not without risk. Therefore, searching for noninvasive serologic biomarkers for liver fibrosis is an importantly clinical issue. Methods: A total of 16 healthy volunteers and 45 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) were enrolled (F0: n = 16, F1: n = 7, F2: n = 17, F3: n = 8 and F4: n = 13, according to the METAVIR classification). Three serum samples of each fibrotic stage were analyzed by two-dimension difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE). The differential proteins were identified by...

  • The presenilin proteins are required for intramembrane cleavage of a subset of type 1 membrane proteins including the Alzheimer’s disease amyloid precursor protein. Previous studies indicate presenilin proteins form enzymatically act-ive high molecular mass complexes consisting of hetero-dimers of N- and C-terminal fragments in association with nicastrin, presenilin enhancer-2 and anterior pharynx defective-1 proteins.

  • Plain x-ray plays a limited role in the evaluation of blunt abdominal trauma. Abdominal radiographs are usually unnecessary. X-rays of the chest and pelvis are often obtained to evaluate for concurrent thoracic or pelvic injuries. Abnormal chest x-ray findings of pneumothorax and rib fractures are associated with intraabdominal injuries and are indications for abdominal imaging if a mechanism for multisystem trauma is present. Common findings include free abdominal air (pneumoperitoneum), pneumothorax, and hemothorax.
