  • Apsychrotrophic bacteriumShewanellasp. strain SIB1 was grown at 4 and 20C, and total soluble proteins extracted from the cells were analyzed by two-dimensional poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Comparison ofthese pat-terns showed that the cellular content ofa protein with a molecular mass of28 kDa and an isoelectric point of four greatly increased at 4 C compared to that at 20C.

  • Kernel based methods dominate the current trend for various relation extraction tasks including protein-protein interaction (PPI) extraction. PPI information is critical in understanding biological processes. Despite considerable efforts, previously reported PPI extraction results show that none of the approaches already known in the literature is consistently better than other approaches when evaluated on different benchmark PPI corpora.

  • In this chapter 3 (part 2), you will: Know why it is important to purify a protein, know what organelles are in the pellet/supernatant during the differential centrifugation of a cell extract, understand how gel permeation chromatography works and what you can learn from this analysis, understand how ion exchange chromatography works,...

  • Arthropod cuticles play an important role as the first barrier against inva-ding pathogens. We extensively determined the sequences of horseshoe crab cuticular proteins. Proteins extracted from a part of the ventral side of the cuticle were purified by chitin-affinity chromatography, and separated by two-dimensional SDS⁄PAGE. Proteins appearing on the gel were designa-ted high molecular mass chitin-binding proteins, and these proteins were then grouped into classes based on their approximate isoelectric points and predominant amino acid compositions. ...

  • We present an approach using syntactosemantic rules for the extraction of relational information from biomedical abstracts. The results show that by overcoming the hurdle of technical terminology, high precision results can be achieved. From abstracts related to baker’s yeast, we manage to extract a regulatory network comprised of 441 pairwise relations from 58,664 abstracts with an accuracy of 83–90%. To achieve this, we made use of a resource of gene/protein names considerably larger than those used in most other biology related information extraction approaches. ...

  • As the amount of on-line scientific literature in the biomedical domain increases, automatic processing has become a promising approach for accelerating research. We are applying syntactic parsing trained on the general domain to identify proteinprotein interactions. One of the main difficulties obstructing the use of language processing is the prevalence of specialized terminology. Accordingly, we have created a specialized dictionary by compiling on-line glossaries, and have applied it for information extraction.

  • We propose an approach for extracting relations between entities from biomedical literature based solely on shallow linguistic information. We use a combination of kernel functions to integrate two different information sources: (i) the whole sentence where the relation appears, and (ii) the local contexts around the interacting entities. We performed experiments on extracting gene and protein interactions from two different data sets. The results show that our approach outperforms most of the previous methods based on syntactic and semantic information. ...

  • While the aesthetic and creative process of interior design would best be done by professional interior designers, our goal is to cre- ate software capable of automatically generating furniture arrange- ments for complex indoor scenes that are optimized to respect im- portant ergonomic factors. This technique would be useful in multi- player online games and other graphics applications requiring fully automatic interior design with a high degree of realism.

An important contribution of our paper, therefore, is applying individual-level data on student characteristics and pre- and post-MBA wages to estimate the returns to an MBA, which allows for a more careful treatment of selection first into attending business school and second into programs of varying types and qualities.

  • Efficient ethanol plants can convert 90-97 percent of the corn’s starch content to ethanol. However, not all batches of corn leave the same amount of starch residue. Studies of ethanol yields from different batches show significant variability (Dien et al., March 2002). Even though it is the starch that is turned into ethanol, researchers have been unable to find a correlation between starch content (or even starch extractability) and the final yield of ethanol (Singh and Graeber). Researchers believe some starches are in a more available form (Dien et al., March 2002).

  • The publications included in the review reported chemical analyses on 100 distinct foodstuffs and presented data on 455 nutrients and other substances. Statistical analysis by foodstuff was impractical given the large array of different foods (and cultivars/breeds) presented in included publications. The review team therefore decided to facilitate analysis and interpretation of the available information by categorising the nutrients and other substances reported into nutrient groups or “families”. ...

  • In this paper, we propose Piggy Bank, a tool integrated into the contemporary web browser that lets Web users extract individual information items from within web pages and save them in Semantic Web format (RDF [20]), replete with metadata. Piggy Bank then lets users make use of these items right inside the same web browser. These items, collected from different sites, can now be browsed, searched, sorted, and organized together, regardless of their origins and types.

  • Congress regulated hazardous waste from inception to disposal under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and EPA has developed a list of regulated substances [15]. However, RCRA does not regulate hazardous wastes involved in oil and gas extraction and production under RCRA Subtitle C. These materials are subject to state regulation under the less stringent RCRA Subtitle D solid waste regulations as well as other federal regulations, although states are also free to adopt more demanding provisions.

  • Cell-free protein synthesis using cell extracts from Escherichia coli, wheat germ and rabbit reticulocytes has been used for over 40 years to produce small amounts of radiolabeled proteins for identification of gene products and other applications. In the E. coli system programmed with plasmid DNA, the cell extract contains or is supplemented with an RNA po-lymerase to transcribe the gene, and the mRNAs are translated by a complex mixture that contains ribo-somes and a full complement of initiation,...

  • A cDNA encoding 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6bisphosphatase was isolated from a Spinacia oleracea leaf library and used to express a recombinant enzyme in Escherichia coli and Spodoptera frugiperda cells. The insoluble protein expressed in E. coli was purified and used to raise antibodies. Western blot analysis of a protein extract from spinach leaf showed a single band of 90.8 kDa. Soluble protein was purified to homogeneity from S. frugiperda cells infected with recombinant baculovirus harboring the isolated cDNA. ...
