  • Esfinge is a general domain Portuguese question answering system. It tries to take advantage of the great amount of information existent in the World Wide Web. Since Portuguese is one of the most used languages in the web and the web itself is a constantly growing source of updated information, this kind of techniques are quite interesting and promising.

  • In this paper we explore the power of surface text patterns for open-domain question answering systems. In order to obtain an optimal set of patterns, we have developed a method for learning such patterns automatically. A tagged corpus is built from the Internet in a bootstrapping process by providing a few hand-crafted examples of each question type to Altavista. Patterns are then automatically extracted from the returned documents and standardized. We calculate the precision of each pattern, and the average precision for each question type. ...

  • The importance of the new textual genres such as blogs or forum entries is growing in parallel with the evolution of the Social Web. This paper presents two corpora of blog posts in English and in Spanish, annotated according to the EmotiBlog annotation scheme. Furthermore, we created 20 factual and opinionated questions for each language and also the Gold Standard for their answers in the corpus. The purpose of our work is to study the challenges involved in a mixed fact and opinion question answering setting by comparing the performance of two Question Answering (QA) systems as far as...

  • This paper presents a multi-layered Question Answering (Q.A.) architecture suitable for enhancing current Q.A. capabilities with the possibility of processing complex questions. That is, questions whose answer needs to be gathered from pieces of factual information scattered in different documents. Specifically, we have designed a layer oriented to process the different types of temporal questions.

  • The main aim of this paper is to analyse the e ects of applying pronominal anaphora resolution to Question Answering QA systems. For this task a complete QA system has been implemented. System evaluation measures performance improvements obtained when information that is referenced anaphorically in documents is not ignored.

  • The design and implementation of a paraphrase component for a natural language questlon-answer system (CO-OP) is presented. A major point made is the role of given and n e w information in formulating a paraphrase that differs in a meaningful way from the user's question. A description is also given of the transformational grammar used by the paraphraser to generate questions. I• INTRO~ION fact, a lexicon and database schema are the only items which contain domain-specific information.

  • This paper presents an open-domain textual Question-Answering system that uses several feedback loops to enhance its performance. These feedback loops combine in a new way statistical results with syntactic, semantic or pragmatic information derived from texts and lexical databases. The paper presents the contribution of each feedback loop to the overall performance of 76% human-assessed precise answers.

  • This paper introduces the concepts of asking point and expected answer type as variations of the question focus. They are of particular importance for QA over semistructured data, as represented by Topic Maps, OWL or custom XML formats. We describe an approach to the identification of the question focus from questions asked to a Question Answering system over Topic Maps by extracting the asking point and falling back to the expected answer type when necessary.

  • Speech interfaces to question-answering systems offer significant potential for finding information with phones and mobile networked devices. We describe a demonstration of spoken question answering using a commercial dictation engine whose language models we have customized to questions, a Web-based textprediction interface allowing quick correction of errors, and an open-domain question-answering system, AnswerBus, which is freely available on the Web.

  • We propose a method to generate large-scale encyclopedic knowledge, which is valuable for much NLP research, based on the Web. We first search the Web for pages containing a term in question. Then we use linguistic patterns and HTML structures to extract text fragments describing the term. Finally, we organize extracted term descriptions based on word senses and domains. In addition, we apply an automatically generated encyclopedia to a question answering system targeting the Japanese InformationTechnology Engineers Examination. ...

  • This paper describes the online demo of the QuALiM Question Answering system. While the system actually gets answers from the web by querying major search engines, during presentation answers are supplemented with relevant passages from Wikipedia. We believe that this additional information improves a user’s search experience.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for propagating verb arguments along lexical chains consisting of WordNet relations. The algorithm creates verb argument structures using VerbNet syntactic patterns. In order to increase the coverage, a larger set of verb senses were automatically associated with the existing patterns from VerbNet. The algorithm is used in an in-house Question Answering system for re-ranking the set of candidate answers. Tests on factoid questions from TREC 2004 indicate that the algorithm improved the system performance by 2.4%. ...

  • In this paper, we discuss how to utilize the co-occurrence of answers in building an automatic question answering system that answers a series of questions on a specific topic in a batch mode. Experiments show that the answers to the many of the questions in the series usually have a high degree of co-occurrence in relevant document passages.

  • Recent work in Question Answering has focused on web-based systems that extract answers using simple lexicosyntactic patterns. We present an alternative strategy in which patterns are used to extract highly precise relational information offline, creating a data repository that is used to efficiently answer questions. We evaluate our strategy on a challenging subset of questions, i.e. “Who is …” questions, against a state of the art web-based Question Answering system.

  • AS part of our long-term research into techniques for information retrieval from natural language data bases, we have developed over the past few years a natural language interface for data base retrieval [1,2]. In developing this system, we have sought general, conceptually simple, linguistically-based solutlons to problems of semantic representation and interpretation. One component of the system, which we have recently redesigned and are now implementing in its revised form, involves the generation of responses. ...

Comparing to other question answering systems including its previous versions, it has a totally independent crawling and indexing system and a fully functioning search engine. Because of its dynamic and continuous indexing, it is possible to answer questions on just-happened facts. Again, it reaches high correct answer rate. In this demonstration we will present the living system as well as its new technical features. ...
