  • This paper presents a multilingual system designed to recognize named entities in a wide variety of languages (currently more than 12 languages are concerned). The system includes original strategies to deal with a wide variety of encoding character sets, analysis strategies and algorithms to process these languages.

  • This thesis examines how artificial neural networks can benefit a large vocabulary, speaker independent, continuous speech recognition system. Currently, most speech recognition systems are based on hidden Markov models (HMMs), a statistical framework that supports both acoustic and temporal modeling. Despite their state-of-the-art performance, HMMs make a number of suboptimal modeling assumptions that limit their potential effectiveness.

  • Sitting at the intersection between statistics and machine learning, Dynamic Bayesian Networks have been applied with much success in many domains, such as speech recognition, vision, and computational biology. While Natural Language Processing increasingly relies on statistical methods, we think they have yet to use Graphical Models to their full potential. In this paper, we report on experiments in learning edit distance costs using Dynamic Bayesian Networks and present results on a pronunciation classification task. ...

  • Results of computational complexity exist for a wide range of phrase structure-based grammar formalisms, while there is an apparent lack of such results for dependency-based formalisms. We here adapt a result on the complexity of ID/LP-grammars to the dependency framework. Contrary to previous studies on heavily restricted dependency grammars, we prove that recognition (and thus, parsing) of linguistically adequate dependency grammars is~A/T'-complete.

  • Adequate mechanical translation can be based only on adequate structural descriptions of the languages involved and on an adequate statement of equivalences. Translation is conceived of as a three-step process: recognition of the structure of the incoming text in terms of a structural specifier; transfer of this specifier into a structural specifier in the other language; and construction to order of the output text specified.

  • This paper presents a probabilistic framework that combines multiple knowledge sources for Haptic Voice Recognition (HVR), a multimodal input method designed to provide efficient text entry on modern mobile devices. HVR extends the conventional voice input by allowing users to provide complementary partial lexical information via touch input to improve the efficiency and accuracy of voice recognition.

  • This paper presents techniques to apply semi-CRFs to Named Entity Recognition tasks with a tractable computational cost. Our framework can handle an NER task that has long named entities and many labels which increase the computational cost. To reduce the computational cost, we propose two techniques: the first is the use of feature forests, which enables us to pack feature-equivalent states, and the second is the introduction of a filtering process which significantly reduces the number of candidate states. ...

  • We define the problem of recognizing entailed relations – given an open set of relations, find all occurrences of the relations of interest in a given document set – and pose it as a challenge to scalable information extraction and retrieval. Existing approaches to relation recognition do not address well problems with an open set of relations and a need for high recall: supervised methods are not easily scaled, while unsupervised and semi-supervised methods address a limited aspect of the problem, as they are restricted to frequent, explicit, highly localized patterns.

  • This paper is divided into two parts. 1 The first section motivates the application of finite-state parsing techniques at the phonetic level in order to exploit certain classes or" contextual constraints. -In the second section, the parsing framework is extended in order to account ['or 'feature spreading' (i:.g., agreement and co-articulation) in a natural way.

  • We present a model of morphological processing which directly encodes prosodic constituency, a notion which is clearly crucial in many widespread morphological processes. The model has been implemented for the Australian language Warlpiri and has been successfully interfaced with a syntactic parser for that language (Brunson, 1986). We contrast our approach with approaches to morphological parsing in the KIMMO framework. 1.

  • Benthic algae have been intensively studied, especially over the past two decades. This intensity has been stimulated by the widespread recognition that benthic algae are ideal indicators of the health of many, if not most, aquatic ecosystems. With this book we hope to synthesize this vital area of research and share its essence with our colleagues and students. We started with an outline of the myriad abiotic and biotic determinants of benthic algal ecology.

  • In this paper, we propose a new event recognition framework for consumer videos by leveraging a large amount of loosely labeled YouTube videos. Our work is based on the observation that a large amount of loosely labeled YouTube videos can be readily obtained by using keywords (also called tags) based search. However, the quality of YouTube videos is generally lower than con- sumer videos because YouTube videos are often down- sampled and compressed by the web server.

  • On August 11, 2010, nearly two years ago, John Resig (creator of jQuery) announced the jQuery Mobile project. While focused on the UI framework, it was also a recognition of jQuery itself as a tool for mobile sites and that work would be done to the core framework itself, to make it work better on devices. Release after release, the jQuery Mobile project evolved into a powerful framework encompassing more platforms, more features, and better performance with every update.

  • Wavelet analysis is one of the most effective solutions to overcome the drawbacks of Fourier analysis, and since the seminal work of Ingrid Daubechies was published in the late 1980s, it has been applied very successfully in various branches of science and engineering. The fractional wavelet techniques started to play an important role in data treatment corresponding to complex systems during the last decade.
