  • We analyse the computational complexity of phonological models as they have developed over the past twenty years. The major results ate that generation and recognition are undecidable for segmental models, and that recognition is NPhard for that portion of segmental phonology subsumed by modern autosegmental models. Formal restrictions are evaluated.

  • Cybersecurity is a complex set of issues involving legal, economic, and national security considerations. In the House, at least nine committees have some significant jurisdictional claim on cyber issues. In May, the White House submitted its legislative language for discussion. The Senate has attempted to construct a comprehensive cyber bill for the last two consecutive congresses. Given the difficulties, it is reasonable to ask why the House should devote time and energy to an issue that is not at the top of the public’s expressed priorities. ...

  • This paper describes a novel instancebased sentence boundary determination method for natural language generation that optimizes a set of criteria based on examples in a corpus. Compared to existing sentence boundary determination approaches, our work offers three significant contributions. First, our approach provides a general domain independent framework that effectively addresses sentence boundary determination by balancing a comprehensive set of sentence complexity and quality related constraints.

  • We investigate linguistic features that correlate with the readability of texts for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). Based on a corpus of texts (including some experimentally measured for comprehension by adults with ID), we analyze the significance of novel discourselevel features related to the cognitive factors underlying our users’ literacy challenges. We develop and evaluate a tool for automatically rating the readability of texts for these users. Our experiments show that our discourselevel, cognitively-motivated features improve automatic readability assessment....

  • If natural language had been designed by a logician, idioms would not exist. They are a feature of discourse that frustrates any simple logical account of how the meanings of utterances depend on the meanings of their parts and on the syntactic relation among those parts. Idioms are transparent to native speakers, but a course of perplexity to those who are acquiring a second language. If someone tells me that Mrs. Thatcher has become the Queen of Scotland, I am likely to say: "That's a tall story.

  • Beginning XML provides a complete course in the Extensible Markup Language (XML) with an unusually gradual learning curve. In fact, the introduction states that the book is "for people who know that it would be a pretty good idea to learn the language, but aren't 100 percent sure why." Despite its recognition of the fuzziness of readers' understanding of the technology, the book delivers a rather comprehensive study of XML. Very little space is wasted detailing the history of XML and its relation to SGML, as is the case in many other titles. The argument for the importance of XML...

  • Several studies have addressed the cross-language transfer of comprehension skills and strategies. Royer and Carlo (1991) examined the transfer of listening and reading comprehension skills from Spanish to English by 49 sixth-grade students enrolled in a transitional bilingual education program. Results indicated that students’ English reading performance at the end of sixth grade was most highly correlated with their reading in Spanish a year earlier. That is, good fifth-grade readers in Spanish became good sixth-grade readers in English.

  • Automatic detection of general relations between short texts is a complex task that cannot be carried out only relying on language models and bag-of-words. Therefore, learning methods to exploit syntax and semantics are required. In this paper, we present a new kernel for the representation of shallow semantic information along with a comprehensive study on kernel methods for the exploitation of syntactic/semantic structures for short text pair categorization.
