  • "Customer Relationship Management: The Winning Strategy in a Challenging Economy" As the economic environment continues to fluctuate, many organizations are asking themselves what strategies they can pursue to bring tangible business benefits while taking stock of the economic conditions. In a growth economy, businesses typically work hard to expand their customer base and spend aggressively to stoke the growth engine. When money is tight however, existing customer relationships grow in importance as organizations seek a cost-effective way to nurture business expansion.

  • The Animal Production and Health Section of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture recognises that the trend towards intensification of livestock production in developing countries presents both opportunities and challenges. The potential opportunities are the flow-on benefits to the producers and local economy while the potential challenges are the flow-on costs to the environment, animal health and welfare.

  • Open-ended spoken interactions are typically characterised by both structural complexity and high levels of uncertainty, making dialogue management in such settings a particularly challenging problem. Traditional approaches have focused on providing theoretical accounts for either the uncertainty or the complexity of spoken dialogue, but rarely considered the two issues simultaneously.

  • Named entity disambiguation is the task of linking an entity mention in a text to the correct real-world referent predefined in a knowledge base, and is a crucial subtask in many areas like information retrieval or topic detection and tracking. Named entity disambiguation is challenging because entity mentions can be ambiguous and an entity can be referenced by different surface forms.

  • The Chinese language is characterized by the lack of formal devices such as morphological tense and number that often provide important clues for syntactic processing tasks. While state-of-theart tagging systems have achieved accuracies above 97% on English, Chinese POS tagging has proven to be more challenging and obtained accuracies about 93-94% (Tseng et al., 2005b; Huang et al., 2007, 2009; Li et al., 2011).

  • In this paper we investigate the relevance of aspectual type for the problem of temporal information processing, i.e. the problems of the recent TempEval challenges. For a large list of verbs, we obtain several indicators about their lexical aspect by querying the web for expressions where these verbs occur in contexts associated with specific aspectual types. We then proceed to extend existing solutions for the problem of temporal information processing with the information extracted this way. ...

  • A challenging problem in open information extraction and text mining is the learning of the selectional restrictions of semantic relations. We propose a minimally supervised bootstrapping algorithm that uses a single seed and a recursive lexico-syntactic pattern to learn the arguments and the supertypes of a diverse set of semantic relations from the Web. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm on multiple semantic relations expressed using “verb”, “noun”, and “verb prep” lexico-syntactic patterns. ...

  • We define the problem of recognizing entailed relations – given an open set of relations, find all occurrences of the relations of interest in a given document set – and pose it as a challenge to scalable information extraction and retrieval. Existing approaches to relation recognition do not address well problems with an open set of relations and a need for high recall: supervised methods are not easily scaled, while unsupervised and semi-supervised methods address a limited aspect of the problem, as they are restricted to frequent, explicit, highly localized patterns.

  • Extracting semantic relationships between entities is challenging. This paper investigates the incorporation of diverse lexical, syntactic and semantic knowledge in feature-based relation extraction using SVM. Our study illustrates that the base phrase chunking information is very effective for relation extraction and contributes to most of the performance improvement from syntactic aspect while additional information from full parsing gives limited further enhancement.

  • Extracting semantic relationships between entities is challenging because of a paucity of annotated data and the errors induced by entity detection modules. We employ Maximum Entropy models to combine diverse lexical, syntactic and semantic features derived from the text. Our system obtained competitive results in the Automatic Content Extraction (ACE) evaluation. Here we present our general approach and describe our ACE results.

  • At present, particle physics faces problems related with disparity in diphoton decay of Higgs boson, discrepancy between theory and experiment of about 3.6σ in anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and neutrino physics. Moreover, the existence of Dark Matter and the Matter-Antimatter Asymmetry are challenges for any physical model. In this review I present some solutions in the framework of the 3-3-1 models. The simple (by Higgs sector) models contain the hybrid inflationary scenario and the first-order phase transitions, from which leptogenesis needed for BAU is followed.
