  • The calculations are based on the linearized Boltzmann equation (BE) and the relaxation time approximation, assuming the scattering by acoustic phonons to be quasi-elastic. We consider three physically distinct temperature ranges with respect to phonon scattering: the Bloch-Gruneisen ¨ (BG), equipartition (EP), and inelastic regimes.

  • The management of the electrical and electronic waste (WEEE) problem in the uncertain environment has a critical effect on the economy and environmental protection of each region. The considered problem can be stated as a fuzzy non-convex optimization problem with linear objective function and a set of linear and non-linear constraints. The original problem is reformulated by using linear relaxation into a fuzzy linear programming problem.

  • In this paper we introduce two strategies for picking relaxation parameters to control the semiconvergence behavior of a sequential block-iterative method. A convergence analysis is presented. We also demonstrate the performance of our strategies by examples taken from tomographic imaging.

  • Bacterial biofilms are regarded to be the primary aetiological factor in the initiation of gingival inflammation and subsequent destruction of periodontal tissues (Offenbacher 1996) and three major specific pathogens have been repeatedly identified as etiologic agents, namely Aggregatibacter (Actinobacillus) actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Tannerella forsythia (Tf) (Socransky et al. 1998).

  • This study uses what Cresswell (2003) refers to as a ‘mixed methods approach’, one that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and a ‘sequential explanatory strategy’ in which the collection and analysis of the quantitative data is followed by the collection and analysis of the qualitative data (p 215).

When the robot has become increasingly more flexible, they were useful in a variety of robot and human applications are expected in teract very closely. Therefore becomes necessary to understand the nature human-computer interaction to information tools and techniques can be developed to allows humans and robots to work together seamlessly, strong and natural. Research on human-machine interaction are diverse and include a variety of topics....

  • ‘Professions’ have been subject to a variety of theoretical schema that attempt to identify their unique characteristics or traits: the features that can be regarded as the basis for the discrimination between forms of occupational organization and control that are professional and those that are not (Saks, 1983; Abbott, 1988). This elaboration of the essential traits of professions is more than a professional discourse.

  • While the links between ICT and environmental outcomes are becoming clearer, there is no separate statistical field that links the two. Nevertheless, some data are available from official statistical sources, from analytical work and from product life cycle studies. This report suggests a conceptual framework for the new statistical field “ICT and the environment” based on an existing OECD framework for information society statistics. Sources of official data to populate the framework are investigated and some relevant work has been identified.

  • Film scholar and author Shoma Chatterji (Subject: Cinema, Object: Women, 1998) says, “Women in Hindi cinema have been decorative objects with rarely any sense of agency being imparted to them. Each phase of Hindi cinema had its own representation of women, but they were confined largely to the traditional, patriarchal frame-work of the Indian society. The ordinary woman has hardly been visible in Hindi cinema.” vi To understand this portrayal in much more depth, we need to have a look at some crucial glimpses which defined the role of women in Hindi films.

  • This paper borrows from the empirical literature on non-financial firms to explain the capital structure of large, publicly traded banks. It uncovers empirical regularities that are inconsistent with a first order effect of capital regulation on banks’ capital structure. Instead, the paper suggests that there are considerable similarities between banks’ and non-financial firms’ capital structures.

  • The Semantic Web [22] holds out a different vision, that of information laid bare so that it can be collected, manipulated, and annotated independent of its location or presentation format- ting. While the Semantic Web promises much more effective access to information, it has faced a chicken-and-egg problem getting off the ground. Without substantial quantities of data avail- able in Semantic Web form, users cannot benefit from tools that work directly with information rather than pages, and Semantic Web-based software agents have little data to show their useful- ness.

  • In the next section we outline some theoretical and empirical results about the relationships between monetary policy, the ináation target of monetary authorities, the level of this target perceived by the public and the long term interest rates dynamics. In section 3, we present the works of Kozicki and Tinsley (1998, 2001a, 2001b) and we establish the interest of this model in our framework.

The agricultural development model in Colombia is mainly based upon the use of agro chemicals and according data reported by the Public Health Surveillance System of Colombia (SIVIGILA), there were in 2008 6.650 intoxication cases for the use of pesticides followed by 7.405 cases in 2009 and 8.

  • Spain was (and still is) the largest producer of mercury in the world. Stories of Spanish galleons carrying tonnes of gold and silver looted from Central and South America back to Spain are well documented. Less well known is the fact that many tonnes of mercury were shipped from Spain to the “New World.” The Spanish conquistadors used that mercury to process precious metals. Parts of Mexico are still heavily contaminated from the thousands of tonnes of mercury that were brought from Spain during the four-hundred-year period of Spanish rule.

  • Biodiversity is fundamental to sustaining life, providing critical ecosystem services such as food provisioning, water purification, flood and drought control, nutrient cycling, and climate regulation, amongst many others. These services are essential to support human well-being and economic growth. Yet despite the significant economic, social and cultural values of biodiversity and ecosystem services, biodiversity worldwide is being lost, and in some areas at an accelerating rate.

  • Overall, the quality of SAR reporting has been quite good, indicating that insur- ance companies are well positioned to report to law enforcement several specific categories of suspected illicit activities relating to money laundering. In addition, they are equally poised to provide through SARs, information that may benefit the mission of state regulatory agencies. FinCEN analysts read and reviewed each of the 641 SARs filed by insurance com- panies between May 2, 2006 and May 1, 2007.

  • Then came 1999 — and a new federal government preoccupation with privacy. The general approach has been to create new federal limitations, not to replace state lim- itations, but to set a nationwide floor of privacy protection. Several states are now try- ing to outdo each other in cutting off access to information about their citizens. On the federal privacy front, there were three noteworthy developments in 1999. First, Congress considered, but did not pass, extremely broad and extremely stringent new limitations on the use of personally identifiable information related to health care.

  • Relevant floor plans can be generated before planning the layout of furniture pieces. Recently, Merrell et al. [2010] proposed a data- driven method to generate residential building layouts. In their work, 120 examples of architectural programs are used to train a Bayesian network that captures the relationships among different rooms. Given certain user requirements as priors, the Bayesian net- work can then be used to generate a floor plan, which is iteratively modified to incorporate desirable human factors. The result is a synthesized floor plan for a residential building.
