Ever since Harry had come home for the summer holidays, Uncle Vernon had been treating him like a bomb that might go off at any moment, because Harry Potter wasn't a normal boy. As a matter of fact, he was as not normal as it is possible to be. Harry Potter was a wizard - a wizard fresh from his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. • Concern about the use of threatened species in traditional Asian medicines grew in the late 1980s as numbers of rhinoceroses and tigers plummeted, largely because of poaching for the medicinal trade. Thousands of species of animals and plants are used in traditional Asian medicines and many of these species are controlled in international trade. In fact, in many cases such controls were partly as a result of demand for medicinal ingredients. Examples include: horn from rhinoceros, musk pods from musk deer, bile salts from bears, bones from tigers and leopards and stems from orchids....

  • Some countries wish to control the wildlife trade at the national as well as the international level, and impose domestic measures. This provides a secondary level of control if medicines and raw materials have entered a country evading import controls. • The trade in traditional Asian medicines includes large volumes of raw ingredients, particularly plant materials such as roots and bark. Identification of the huge variety of materials is very difficult, particularly when one sliced root looks, to the untrained eye, identical to any other. Some priority raw ingredients are fairly easy to learn to identify by eye at least as a preliminary measure, such as rhinoceros horn, tiger bone, musk deer pod, bear gallbladder, Saiga antelope horn and marine turtle shell.

  • Animal parts are generally easier to identify than plants but only if they have not been processed. For example, many ingredients such as rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory are obvious if whole but if they are processed into shavings or powder then it is impossible to identify them by eye. For most processed material forensic analysis is probably the only option if the items are not labelled. The types of animal parts to look out for are bones, horns, tusks, gallbladders, shells and fur-covered glands (see section on fakes below).
