Methanol:coenzyme M methyltransferase from methanogenic archaea is a cobalamin-dependent enzyme composed of three different subunits: MtaA, MtaB and MtaC. MtaA is a zinc protein that catalyzes the methylation of coenzyme M (HS-CoM) with methylcob(III)alamin. We report zinc XAFS (X-ray absorption fine structure) results indicating that, in the absence of coenzyme M, zinc is probably coordinated by a single sulfur ligand and three oxygen or nitrogen ligands. In the presence of coenzyme M, one (N/O)-ligand was replaced by sulfur, most likely due to ligation of the thiol group of coenzyme M....

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) is inactivated by insulin and lithium and, like insulin, Li also activates glycogen synthase (GS)viainhibition of GSK3. Li also mimics insu-lin’s ability to stimulate glucose transport (GT), an obser-vation that has led to the suggestion that GSK3 may coordinate hormonal increases in GT and glycogen synthe-sis. Here we have used Li and SB-415286, a selective GSK3 inhibitor, to establish the importance of GSK3 in the hor-monal activation of GT in terms of its effect on GS in L6 myotubes and3T3-L1adipocytes. ...

The budding yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiaepossesses a very flexible and complex programme of gene expression when exposed to a plethora of environmental insults. Therefore, yeast cell homeostasis control is achieved through a highly coordinated mechanism of transcription regulation invol-ving several factors, each performing specific functions. Here, we present our current knowledge of the function of the yeast activator protein family, formed by eight basic-leucine zipper trans-activators, which have been shown to play an important role in stress response....

The structure of the Mg 2+ -dependent enzyme human phosphoserine phosphatase (HPSP) was exploited to examine the structural and functional role of the divalent cation in the active site of phosphatases. Most interesting is the biochemical observation that a Ca 2+ ion inhibits the activity of HPSP, even in the presence of added Mg 2+ .The sixfold coordinated Mg 2+ ion present in the active site of HPSP under normal physiological conditions, was replaced by a Ca 2+ ion by using a crystallization conditionwith high concentration of CaCl2(0.7M). ...

Hemopexin (HPX), which serves as a scavenger and transporter of toxic plasma heme, has been postulated to play a key role in the homeostasis of NO. In fact, HPX–heme(II) reversibly binds NO and facilitates NO scaven-ging by O2. HPX–heme is formed by two four-bladed b-propeller domains. The heme is bound between the twob-propeller domains, residues His213 and His266 coordinate the heme iron atom.

Heme oxygenase converts heme into biliverdin, CO, and free iron. In plants, as well as in cyanobacteria, heme oxygenase plays a particular role in the biosynthesis of photoreceptive pigments, such as phytochromobilins and phycobilins, supplying biliverdin IXaas a direct synthetic resource.

AD Nil NISTRATORS’ PERCEPTIONS OF INTERNAL AUDITING ROLES AND EFFECTIVENESS IN TEXAS AND BIG TWELVE PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES These coordination failures are less likely in markets with more interjurisdictional competition, as in these markets there are always alternative districts that are relatively similar in the peer group offered, and parents are able to select effective schools without paying a steep price in reduced peer quality.

Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and c-met play a major role in cancer invasion and metastasis. Evidence has suggested that uPA and c-met overexpression may be coordinated in human hepatocellular carci-noma (HCC). In the present study, to understand whether the expression of these genes might be coregulated by specific microRNAs (miRs) in human cells, we predicted thatHomo sapiensmicroRNA-23b could recog-nize two sites in the 3¢-UTR of uPA and four sites in the c-met 3¢-UTR by the algorithm pictar. ...
