SMEs contribute greatly to GDP and job creation in Vietnam. Studies of what factors are important to the development of SMEs in Vietnam are, however, scarce. Particularly, there has been little rigorous research focusing on the roles of human and social capital of the owners. This study reveals that education, knowledge, and social networks of the owners are essential for innovations in management and performance of the SMEs in Vietnam.

The paper presents research results of the relationship of human resource training and human resource assessment and employee engagement in Vietnam small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Quantitative research results showed 4 factors affecting the employee engagement in SMEs including employee age, time worked in business, human resource training, and fair assessment. The results showed that the human resources training has no impact on promoting the commitment of employees in SMEs.

This study provides for the new evidence of factors determining export participation of private manufacturing SMEs in Vietnam. Using a recent national survey in 2011 about private manufacturing SMEs, we find that while more years in business does not affect the probability of firm exporting, firm with smaller scale have a lower likelihood of exporting.

In this study, the employment growth of SMEs in Vietnam is investigated with respect to its crucial role in the entire economy. The results of the regression analysis of fixed-effect model show that informal payment, low institution quality, and tax inspections are hindering the employment growth of SMEs in Vietnam, while expanding the access to finance can help SMEs develop.
