  • The book deals with several aspects of soil erosion, focusing on its connection with the agricultural world. Chapters' topics are various, ranging from irrigation practices to soil nutrient, land use changes or tillage methodologies. The book is subdivided into fourteen chapters, sorted in four sections, grouping different facets of the topic: introductive case studies, erosion management in vineyards, soil erosion issue in dry environments, and erosion control practices.

  • Soil erosion affects a large part of the Earth surface, and it represents one of the most relevant environmental problems worldwide. Intense land degradation processes that destroyed civilizations in the past are still going on at present. Accelerated soil erosion is one of the main soil threats, as the natural balance between soil formation and loss may be seriously compromised, leading to desertification and permanent loss of fertility and protective function. Soil erosion is not only related to agricultural activities and farming practices, but also to land management in general....

  • Bacterial community in dioxin contaminated soil and mud samples from Danang airport was enumerated and studied for their potential degradation capability against three-ring compound carbazol. The cell number was determined on nutrient rich medium and on mineral medium supplemented with carbazol. It has been showed that number of cells presented in mud samples was significantly higher than in soil samples, in the range of 1 magnitude order. About 50% of the total cell number in each sample grown on the medium with carbazol.

  • Polyethylene-starch blend polymer has already found to be a potential candidate to replace non-degradable plastic in packaging [7]. However, the degradation of that polymer in natural ambience (soil burial test) needs to be further evaluated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degradability of PE-starch blend polymer in soil and in liquid medium. The soil is added starch degrading bacteria isolated from natural soil.

  • Drawing on the collective expertise of world authorities, Ecological Basis of Agroforestry employs extensive use of tables and figures to demonstrate how ecologically sustainable agroecosystems can meet the challenges of enhancing crop productivity, soil fertility, and environmental sustainability. Divided into four sections, this comprehensive volume begins with a study of tree-crop interaction in tropical and temperate climates.

  • The soil ecosystem provides services such as carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, water purification, provisioning of industrial and pharmaceutical goods, and a mitigating sink for chemical and biological agents. However, the soil is subject to various degradation processes. Its relation with the hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere makes the interacting processes even more complex. Moreover, as the soilhuman interactions increase, threats, leading to a series of impacts on soil health, become more important....

  • Thus, it remedies soil degradation, desertification, and deforestation. Jatropha is native of tropical America, but now flourish in many parts of the tropics and sub-tropics in Africa/Asia. Various parts of the plant are of medicinal(both human and veterinary purposes) value for instance, and are under intensive scientific investigation. The oil is a strong purgative, widely employed as an antiseptic for cough, skin diseases, and a pain reliever from rheumatism. Jatropha latex can heal wounds and also has antimicrobial properties (Openshaw, 2000).

  • We are experiencing rapid growth rate of urbanization, motorization and industrialization. Our overwhelming dependence on fossil fuel to drive our daily life and economic activities has led to releasing of various green house gases and air pollutants into the atmosphere resulting in degrading of the quality of air in the urban areas and global problem of climate change. Degrading of the quality of air in the urban areas has put at risk the lives of millions of people under direct threat due to health impacts associated with air pollution.

  • Proper methods should be adopted for management of solid waste disposal. Industrial wastes can be treated physically, chemically and biologically until they are less hazardous. Acidic and alkaline wastes should be first neutralized; the insoluble material if biodegradable should be allowed to degrade under controlled conditions before being disposed. As a last resort, new areas for storage of hazardous waste should be investigated such as deep well injection and more secure landfills.

  • The advance of chemicals in industry during the XX century gave rise to a number of highly aggressive compounds to human beings, and that altered the ecosystems balancing. Human population is inevitably exposed to environmental pollution through air-degraded products, water, the soil and food and their introduction into the food chain (Gomez et al, 2011). The use of pesticides has been recognized and accepted as an essential ingredient in the modern agriculture for the control of pests, which damage crops and as a result, they produce a severe loss in food production.

  • Metabolism of pesticides denotes that any foreign substance that enters in the living system and how it will be changed into non-toxic and thrown out due to the enzymatic activity and other mode of action. When chemical toxins applied to nonliving substance (soil and water) that will lose the toxic principles by degradation process due to the action of biotic and abiotic factors. The time to nullify the toxicity is of prime importance and it vary depending upon the chemical molecule and environmental conditions.

  • Due to their low aqueous solubilities, the PCBs and PAHs lay on the surface of soils and waters. PCBs and PAHs adsorb strongly to the organic fraction of soils (Girvin & Scott, 1997; Hiller et al., 2011). Soils contaminated with PCBs and PAHs are transported directly or indirectly by rivers to the water reservoir and are subsequently converted into the bed sediments. Therefore, soils could be considered as the primary sinks for these organic contaminants. PCBs and PAHs are persistent in the environment, resistant to degradation process, and accumulate in food chain.

  • The technological conditions of obtaining the polylactic acid-Vietnamese cassava starch blend on the mix-brabender were investigated. The optimal conditions were: temperature 160o C, reaction time 6 minutes, screw speed 45 r/min., initial material ratio in weight percentage PLA80- PEG10-TB20. Polyethyleneglycol (PEG) as a plasticizer, PN-47 as a distribution agent was used. It showed that the optimal starch content was 20 wt%. Increase in starch content lead to increase in water absorbability and weight loss of the materials.
