  • This is the eight book of examples from the Theory of Probability. In general, this topic is not my favourite, but thanks to my former colleague, Ole Jørsboe, I somehow managed to get an idea of what it is all about. We shall, however, in this volume deal with some topics which are closer to my own mathematical fields. The prerequisites for the topics can e.g. be found in the Ventus: Calculus 2 series and the Ventus: Complex Function Theory series, and all the previous Ventus: Probability c1-c6. Unfortunately errors cannot be avoided in a first edition of a work of this type.

  • NOTE. This collection of anecdotes, illustrative sketches, and memorabilia generally, relating to the ever fresh and interesting subject of BOOKS AND AUTHORS, is not presented as complete, nor even as containing all the choice material of its kind. The field from which one may gather is so wide and fertile, that any collection warranting such a claim would far exceed the compass of many volumes, much less of this little book.

  • Information about the topology and link-level characteristics of a network is critical for many applications including network diagnostics and management. However, this information is not always directly accessible; subnetworks may not cooperate in releasing information and widespread local measurement can be prohibitively expensive. Network tomographic techniques obviate the need for network cooperation, but the majority assume probing from a single source, which imposes scalability limitations because sampling traffic is concentrated on network links close to the source.

  • In general, the best beers at a competition should be assigned scores in the 40+ range, with real evaluations of the beer identifying some characteristics of the beer that make it non-perfect. A beer receiving a perfect score of 50 must indeed be perfect; it must have absolutely no flaws, exemplify the style as well as or better than the best commercial examples, be perfectly brewery-fresh, and be well- handled and presented. These conditions might not all be under the brewer’s control, so achieving a perfect beer at the point of presentation to judges is extremely rare. ...

  • Cognitive maps have emerged as an important tool in modeling and decision making. In a nutshell they are signed di-graphs that capture the cause/effect relationships that subject matter experts believe exist in a problem space under consideration. Each node in the map represents some variable concept.

  • Climate dynamicists generally characterize the Hadley circulation in terms of some derived meteorological parameters, such as the mass stream function (the nondivergent part of the flow) or the velocity potential (the divergent circulation), both of which are based on measurements of the three-dimensional wind field. Yet, we know very little about how such indices have varied in the past—beyond the most recent decades.

  • Car-sharing can be seen as an effective measure for reducing the burden of automobile traffic on the environment. The automobiles belonging to Swedish car-sharing organizations are often newer and have more satisfactory environmental and safety characteristics than Swedish cars in general. Studies have also shown that a member of an average car-sharing scheme drives only about two-thirds as much as earlier and that a shared car, through being used more effectively, takes the place of some five privately owned cars and as many parking spaces.

  • In this paper we present the implementation of a digital lock-in amplifier (LIA) completely based on Labview with a general-purpose data acquisition board (or a high quality sound card) and a high-gain low-noise amplifier. The signal analysis is processed by the software. We describe some characteristics of the LIA including output voltage vs. frequency and output phase vs. noise. The LIA can be used to measure the small signals, even in presence of broadband noise which is several times greater than the signal itself. Since the signal processing takes place on the computer, ...

  • Statistics alone do not tell us why mortality or coverage rates are rising or falling, nor suggest which policy responses are appropriate. Chapters 2-7 of this report look beyond the target-by-target information and attempt to identify trends, successes, and failures which are currently affecting the health sector as a whole. Some of the challenges are fundamental, and characteristic of poverty and lack of development in general, although many are specific to health.

  • An extensive body of research suggests that psychological assets do confer resilience and protection and do so at both an individual and an ecological level (Bartley 2006; Fagg et al 2006; Sacker and Schoon 2007). The optimism, self esteem, self efficacy and interest in others that contribute to a child’s success at school are also characteristics of resilient neighbourhoods and communities, where norms of trust, tolerance, support, participation and reciprocity may provide some protection from the effects of deprivation.
