  • The vital condition for the practical applicability of any control system is that its basic characteristics are invariant to variations of its constituent parameters and to external disturbances, at least in some well-defined range. This is considered as Robustness, and the design of control systems with prescribed performance and stability limits is the subject of Robust Control.

The representation for pending realization decisions and planned linguistic actions (the results of earlier decisions) is a surface-level syntactic phrase structure augmented by explicit labelings for its constituent positions (hereafter referred to as the tree).3 This working-structure is used simultaniously for control (determining w h a t action to take next)....

  • The country case studies make clear that international partners share some of the blame, particularly because they too often fail to coordinate programs to help promote more integrated, comprehensive health care for women. However, it is equally clear that many of the obstacles are wholly local in nature: National governments and policymakers are often unable or unwilling to initiate or sustain health care programs and reforms that would improve women’s access to services and, by extension, reduce rates of vertical transmission.

  • Our aim is to contribute to the above literature by proposing a life-cycle model with individual income uncertainty that can be used to assess how various macroeconomic factors a®ect the equilibrium value of household credit. We show that its value de- pends on (i) the lending-deposit interest rate spread, (ii) individual income uncertainty, (iii) individual productivity persistence, and (iv) the generosity of the pension system.

  • Less than 20 years ago the field of cannabis and the cannabinoids was still considered a minor, somewhat quaint, area of research. A few groups were active in the field, but it was already being viewed as stagnating. The chemistry of cannabis was well known, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), identified in 1964, being the only major psychoactive constituent and cannabidiol, which is not psychoactive, possibly contributing to some of the effects. These cannabinoids and several synthetic analogs had been thoroughly investigated for their pharmacological effects.

  • Best-first chart parsing utilises a figure of merit (FOM) to efficiently guide a parse by first attending to those edges judged better. In the past it has usually been static; this paper will show that with some extra information, a parser can compensate for FOM flaws which otherwise slow it down. Our results are faster than the prior best by a factor of 2.5; and the speedup is won with no significant decrease in parser accuracy. length. Incomplete constituents ("edges") are stored in an agenda. The exhaustion of the agenda definitively marks the completion of the parsing algorithm, but...

With our techniques, such information can be conveniently converted to a system-call sequence that describes the behavior of the process, and some- times, the data it works on and the activities of its users.

  • In the paper it is argued that for some linguistic phenomena, current discourse representation structures are insufficiently finegrained, both from the perspective of serving as representation in NLP and from a truth conditional perspective. One such semantic phenomenon is uniqueness. It is demonstrated that certain elements are forced to have a unique interpretation, from a certain point in discourse onwards. This could be viewed as the semantic counterpart of surface order.

  • Everyone is affected by their oral health. Good oral health is a key component to a healthy life because it affects how we eat, speak and how we relate to each other with confidence in our healthy smiles. Pain and infection that may arise from oral diseases can affect our capacity to function as full members of society. For example, if you are kept from going to school, or from getting a job because of the condition of your teeth and mouth, then it may have economic and social impacts in your life. In some extreme cases, oral diseases...

  • Most students want to get good marks for their essays, and pass every exam. Most students worry about not knowing enough to do this. Some are right to worry. But you may not realise that your marks depend at least as much on how well you can communicate your knowledge. This chapter looks at how you can use what you know to the very best effect. Getting great marks is a skill in its own right, and is obviously important at university. Less obviously, most of the constituent skills are highly transferable....

The answer may be strictly technical, but it may also involve some kind of human feeling about our environment, and our (eventual) limitations to deal with its fluidic constituents.

Rubey, in his Presidential Address to the Geological Society of America, took the latter point of view. His arguments were colored by the knowledge available at that time of the age of the Earth and the age of the oldest rocks. Based on the analysis of lead isotopes in galenas, it was determined in the late 1940s that the Earth was about 3.2 billion years old.

The answer may be strictly technical, but it may also involve some kind of human feeling about our environment and our (eventual) limitations to deal with its fluidic constituents. As teachers, when talking to our students about the importance of quantifying fluids, we (authors) go to the blackboard and draw, in blue color, a small circumference in the center of the board, and add the obvious name 'Earth'.

  • Our industrialized society generates an increasing amount of waste. This waste is released into the atmosphere, dumped into the water or buried into the earth. The pollution of the atmosphere is primarily caused by the combustion of fossil fuels in energy conversion devices. Some water and land pollution also occurs during the use of fossil fuels, but this problem is not as severe as that of air pollution and it is similar to that confronted by other industries (such as the chemical industry, to name just one).

  • There is lively debate about whether Alu serves some larger purpose in primate genomes or is merely “selfish DNA” that has been successful in its mode of replication. Alu insertions in coding exons are implicated in a number of human diseases, including neurofibromatosis, thalassemia, cancer, and heart attack. However, the vast majority of Alus are located in introns or intergenic regions, where they appear to have no phenotypic effect.

Some dismiss medical marijuana as a hoax that exploits our natural compassion for the sick; others claim it is a uniquely soothing medicine that has been withheld from patients through regulations based on false claims. Proponents of both views cite “scientific evidence” to support their views and have expressed those views at the ballot box in recent state elections.
