The purpose of this article is to give some context to the current discussions abounding in language teaching classrooms around the world. I think it is essential to judge the most recently marketed approaches in the light of what has gone before. And following Thomas Kuhn, who wrote the seminal The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, my suggestion is that we integrate and account for, rather than sweep away, past approaches.

In recent years, the U.S. Army has become increasingly interested in “commonality”—the sharing of common parts across different entities. Commonality has implications for procurers, designers, developers, trainers, logisticians, and operators. Unfortunately, commonality is poorly defined and conceptualized, which can contribute to confused discussion and poor decisionmaking. For example, engines are often described as “common,” even if significant components, such as the turbocharger, have been removed to make the engines fit different vehicle types.

Broadly speaking, you can deduct from your turnover all the costs you incur for the sole purpose of earning business profits. But you cannot deduct costs which you incur for a non-business purpose, such as your own personal expenses or drawings. And you cannot deduct capital costs, that is, the cost of buying fixed assets or intangibles, such as goodwill, which last for several years (or losses you suffer when you sell them). But you may be able to claim capital allowances (see page 8) for these capital costs.

However, double mode will also cause a redundancy effect. Diao and Sweller (2007) conducted a study with university students which demonstrated that text-only presentation mode was better than synchronised sound and text presentation mode, for both performance and cognitive load. This result supported the proposition that the redundancy effect occurs when sound is presented simultaneously with text, which is not beneficial to learning. However, this study did not take learners’ prior knowledge into account. A Chinese learning study, with high school...

My job was to help convince the customer that they should be using our RISC processor in their laser printers. In other words, we exclude both the analysis of other (non-economic) foreign policies with an impact on the development of development-aid-receiving countries, and the coherence between the instruments and objectives of international development cooperation policy. Some of these aspects are covered in previous papers on the coherence of Spain’s development policies, such as Alonso and FitzGerald (2003). This speaks to the fact that having a formal account is not costless in most parts of the world and may be viewed as unnecessary by a person whose income stream is small or irregular. Other common reasons reported for not having an account are that banks or accounts are too expensive (cited by 25 percent of adults without a formal account) and that banks are too far away (cited by 20...
