Cough variant asthma (CVA) is one of the special populations of asthma. The aim of the study was to compare small airways, the degree of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and airway inflammatory subtypes between CVA and classic asthma (CA), and investigate the relationship between these markers to determine the accuracy as indicators of CVA.

Pneumonia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. COPD patients using inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) have an increased risk of pneumonia, but less is known about whether ICS treatment in asthma also increases the risk of pneumonia. The aim of this analysis was to examine risk factors for hospitalisations with pneumonia in a general population sample with special emphasis on asthma and the use of ICS in asthmatics.

In October 2003, 77 million persons used a computer at work, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. These workers accounted for 55.5 percent of total employment. About 2 of every 5 employed individuals connected to the Internet or used e-mail while on the job. These proportions were slightly higher than those measured in the prior survey conducted in September 2001. (See table A.) The Global Findex indicators are drawn from survey data collected over the 2011 calen- dar year, covering more than 150,000 adults in 148 economies and representing about 97 percent of the world’s population. The survey was carried out by Gallup, Inc. in as- sociation with its annual Gallup World Poll, which since 2005 has surveyed about 1,000 people annually in each of up to 157 economies, 3 using randomly selected, nationally representative samples. 4 The target population is the entire civilian, noninstitutional- ized population age 15 and above.

In the ongoing pilot study of global standards in institutional self-evaluation, 11 schools in eight countries had confirmed the value of the standards being tested. A further 24 schools had been brought into the study, for which information had been received for all but the final two schools. The purpose of accreditation and quality improvement in medical education is to adjust medical education to changing conditions in the health care delivery system and to prepare doctors for the needs and expectations of society.

In February 2007, NACHC produced the document “Elderly Services In Health Centers: A Guide to Position Your Health Center to Serve a Growing Elderly Population.” That document presented issues for health centers to consider to meet elders’ health care needs and to take advantage of opportunities presented by the growing elderly population. This document continues NACHC’s efforts to position health centers to assure elderly people access to quality health care, but with a focus on individuals with medical or mental health conditions that limit their ability to care for themselves.

The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) authorized the development of several new types of health plans for the elderly. The new Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are of particular relevance to the disabled elderly population. MMA allowed for three types of Special Need Plans, one aimed at residents of SNFs, a second aimed at dual Medicare and Medicaid eligible individuals, and a third aimed at patients with one or more chronic disease problems. To date, most SNPs have targeted the dually eligible but all three could be relevant to health centers serving the disabled elderly.

Green space may also have an impact on communities’ resilience and wellbeing. A series of studies in deprived, urban areas in the US showed that presence of green spaces contributed to an increased ability for the poorest, single-parent mothers to cope with major life issues xix , reductions in crime, and in aggression indicators. xx A further study showed reduced admissions for mental illness associated with increasing access to green space. xxi Contact with nature was linked to fewer clinic visits in prisoners.

Descriptive characteristics of both cohorts and results of the follow up procedure are presented in Table 1. The Saarland cohort was approximately half the size of the cohort in NRW. Females were slightly overrepresented in both cohorts. The arrival period for entering the cohort was four years longer for the Saarland cohort. The NRW study population was restricted by age at migration of 15 years or older, whereas the Saarland cohort had no age restriction. Thus, the Saarland cohort was on average younger.
