  • The stability and performance of a structure founded on soil depend on the subsoil conditions, ground surface features, type of construction, and sometimes the meteorological changes. Subsoil conditions can be explored by drilling and sampling, seismic surveying, excavation of test pits, and by the study of existing data. Elaborate site investigation oftentimes cannot be conducted due to a limited assigned budget. For very favorable sites, such investigation may not be warranted.

  • The EViews workfile is defined as a file in EViews, which provides many convenient visual ways, such as (i) to enter and save data sets, (ii) to create new series or variables from existing ones, (iii) to display and print series and (iv) to carry out and save results of statistical analysis, aswell as each equation of the models applied in the analysis.By using EViews, each statistical model that applied previously could be recalled and modified easily and quickly to obtain the best fit model, based on personal judgment using an interactive process.

  • The art of compliance is a craft much like that of a carpenter who learns to work with various kinds of wood and designs. Ours is an industry wrought with differences. While the regulations that govern FDA-regulated industries are proscribed, how the regulations are interpreted and applied really depends on experience and how well one has mastered the craft of compliance. There are no proscribed procedures, but there are guideposts common to all FDA-regulated industries, whether a firm manufactures medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or biological products....

  • The influence of temperature and the type of expander on the cycle life of negative lead±acid battery plates set to cycling tests following the requirements of the ECE-15 test protocol has been investigated. The plates prepared with the currently used expanders Vanisperse (Vs) or Indulin (In) alone have a considerably shorter cycle life than negative plates produced with a blend of the two expanders.

  • The PLAXIS 2D program is a special purpose two-dimensional finite element program used to perform deformation and stability analysis for various types of geotechnical applications. Real situations may be modelled either by a plane strain or an axisymmetric model. The program uses a convenient graphical user interface that enables users to quickly generate a geometry model and finite element mesh based on a representative vertical cross section of the situation at hand. Users need to be familiar with the Windows environment.

  • On 1 July 2007 a Polish-Macedonian agreement on social security entered into force. It replaced an agreement between the Government of the Polish People’s Republic and the Gove- rnment of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia of 1958. The agreement between the Republic of Poland and the United States of America signed in Warsaw on 2 April 2008 and the administrative arrangement on its application, signed in Warsaw on 2 April 2008, entered into force on 1 March 2009.

  • Scoring Extended- and Short-Response Items Extended- and short-response items are evaluated according to an established scoring scale, called a rubric, developed from a combination of expectations and a sample of actual student responses. Such rubrics must be particularized by expected work and further developed by examples of student work in developing a guide for scorers. Illinois educators play a substantial role in developing these guides used for the scoring of the short- and extended-response items.

  • Managing Small Office WLAN An Ideal Solution from D-Link White Paper May, 2009 Abstract The deployment of wireless local area network (WLAN) in a small office environment is often hindered by the lack of simplicity, stability and affordability. Multiple access points (APs) will require more effort in configuration and management, and the complexity of security settings adds to the burden. With limited resources in a small office, solutions provided for bigger organizations will be too complicated and not economical.

Nanoscale Research Letters 2011, 6:231 NANO EXPRESS Open Access Stability of nanofluids in quiescent and shear flow fields Sanjeeva Witharana1*, Haisheng Chen2*, Yulong Ding1 Abstract An experimental study was conducted to investigate the structural stability of ethylene glycol-based titanium dioxide nanoparticle suspensions (nanofluids) prepared by two-step method. The effects of particle concentration, fluid temperature, shear rate and shear duration were examined.

  • Recent studies have shown that differences in life history may lead to consistent inter-individual variation in behavioural traits, so-called behavioural syndromes, animal personalities or temperaments. Consis- tencies of behaviours and behavioural syndromes have mainly been studied in non-cooperative species. Insights on the evolution of coopera- tion could be gained from studying individual differences in life histories and behavioural traits.

  • A number of biologists have probed the history of insects to determine what factors account for their huge diversity. Peter Mayhew, a biologist at the Univer- sity of York, has tested the leading hypotheses. Insects don’t seem to have a par- ticularly high rate of speciation, he has found, but they do seem good at with- standing extinctions. Fifty percent of all families of insect species alive today existed 250 million years ago. None of the families of tetrapod species alive 250 million years ago exists today; all have been replaced by newer groups.

  • Recently, we have shown that phenyl hydroquinone, a hepatic metabolite of the Ames test-negative carcinogen o-phenylphenol, efficiently induced aneuploidy in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We further found that phenyl hydroquinone arrested the cell cycle at G1 and G2 ⁄M. In this study, we demonstrate that phenyl hydroquinone can arrest the cell cycle at the G2 ⁄M transition as a result of stabilization of Swe1 (a Wee1 homolog), probably leading to inactivation of Cdc28 (a Cdk1⁄Cdc2 homolog).

  • A growing empirical literature examines the relationship between family income and child health. An article by Case, Lubotsky and Paxson (2002) (CLP) shows that, in the United States, the socioeconomic gradient in adult health has its origins in childhood. Using data from 1986 to 1994, they find that poor children are reported by their parents to be in worse health than wealthy children, and this gradient becomes larger as children grow older. These results suggest that the relationship between income and health that is observed in adulthood has its roots in childhood.

  • The hypothesis is tested that Jun–Fos activator protein-1 coiled coil inter-actions are dominated during late folding events by the formation of intri-cate intermolecular electrostatic contacts. A previously derived cJun–FosW was used as a template as it is a highly stable relative of the wild-type cJun–cFos coiled coil protein (thermal melting temperature = 63C versus 16C), allowing kinetic folding data to be readily extracted.

  • A soft ground condition exists whenever construction loads a cohesive foundation soil beyond its preconsolidation stress, as often occurs with saturated clays and silts having SPT blow counts that are near zero. The paper recommends testing programs, testing methods and data interpretation techniques for developing design parameters for settlement and stability analyses. It hopes to move the state-of-practice closer to the state-of-the-art and thus is intended for geotechnical practitioners and teachers rather than researchers.
