Sustainable land management

This study aimed to identify the factors affecting farmers’ adoption of sustainable land management (SLM) practices to combat land degradation in Vietnam. Based on the survey data from 826 farmers in three representative regions, the study showed that the SLM model and SLM adoption rate were quite varied due to differences of natural and socio-economic conditions.

The amount of waste generated is increasing in both quantity and complexity, in line with the level of economic development, but the land area available for solid waste treatment is limited. Residents' attitudes and willingness to pay (WTP) regarding waste segregation at source and recycling were investigated in this study through a survey using questionnaires conducted in the Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province.

The research reported herein has demonstrated that pervious pavements can be introduced as a sustainable stormwater management initiative and as a key Water Sensitive Urban Design feature to deliver numerous benefits to the environment. The outcomes from the study will be useful in designing environmentally friendly car parks, pedestrian paths, light traffic drive ways, sporting grounds and public areas in the future.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) pool is the largest among the terrestrial pools. The restoration of SOC pool in arable lands represents a potential sink for atmospheric CO2. The management and enhancement of SOC is important for sustainable agriculture. The cropping system and soil type influence crop biomass under different fertilization. Agriculture acts as both the sink and sources of the greenhouse gases.

Recently, drought has occurred severely in the Central Highland of Vietnam, particularly during dry seasons of El Niño years. Towards disaster mitigation and sustainable management for drought, this study aims to clarify relationship between drought area detected in dry peak month (March) in years El Niño occurred such as 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2016 with local main climate factors and land-uses.

A site for silvicultural trials were selected at the same station trials ha of Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV) FSIV, located in Quang Tri Province. The site meets the criteria for a study of long-term sustainability, especially in terms of land use rights are managed by FSIV, and may be protected from changes in land use. It is relatively uniform and has been fenced to prevent browsing and impact from breeding.
