  • An optogenetic upgrade for the tet - OFF system fused the inhibitor to the blue light-responsive B-LID degron and optimized the performance of this construct with regard to the number of Med25VBD repeats. This approach resulted in an optogenetic upgrade of the popular Tet-OFF (TetR-VP64, tetO7-PhCMVmin)  system  that  allows tunable, blue light-inducible gene expression in HEK-293T  cells.

  • This volume consists of a collection of current studies on free electron lasers. Free Electron Lasers covers the analysis of fundamentals and questions of design of these devices functioning from the infrared to ultraviolet or xuv wavelength regimes. In addition to the comparison with conventional lasers, analyses of some related topics concerning near-field and cavity electrodynamics, compact and table-top arrangements and strong radiation–induced exotic states of matter are presented.

  • All the phenomena of nature are characterized by motion; this is an essential property of matter, having infinity of aspects. For instance, the motion can be mechanical, physical, chemical and biological; there correspond various sciences of nature. Among them, mechanics studies the objective laws of the mechanical motion of material bodies, the simplest form of motion of matter; we will deal with such a study in what follows. The scientific study of matter has put in evidence its existence in the form of physical systems.

  • Heme oxygenase-1 catalyzes the breakdown of heme and is protective in models of kidney transplantation. In this study we describe the induction of heme oxygenase-1 mRNA and protein by insulin. Following treatment with insulin, a five-fold increase in heme oxygenase-1 mRNA and a four-fold increase in protein expression were observed in renal adenocarcinoma cells; insulin-induced heme oxygenase-1 expression was also demonstrated in mouse primary tubular epithelial cells.

  • Geometry is a branch of mathematics related research space. Using experience, or perhaps by intuition, it is recognized by the space fundamental characteristics, the geometric axioms called the system. Axiomatic system including the original concept is not defined and the axioms (also known as the proposition) does not prove a relationship defined between the concepts.

  • Credit Guarantee Corporations (CGCs) are public institutions that support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by serving as guarantors to make it easier for them to borrow funds, which are necessary for their business operations, from financial institutions. SMEs play an important role in Japan's economy. The credit guarantee system improves the credit worthiness of SMEs, which lack physical collateral and have weak credit standings. It helps direct funds to them from private financial institutions and provides them with smoother access to financing.

  • We report the development of a high-level bacterial expression system for the Alzheimer’s disease-associated amyloid b-peptide (Ab), together with a scaleable and inexpensive purification procedure. Ab(1–40) and Ab(1–42) coding sequences together with added ATG codons were cloned directly into a Pet vector to facilitate production of Met-Ab(1–40) and Met-Ab(1– 42), referred to as Ab(L1–40) and Ab(L1–42), respectively.

  • Hypoxic preconditioning may afford protection against subsequent lethal hypoxia. As hypoxic tolerance induces changes in the expression of genes involved in DNA damage and repair response pathways, we investigated whether DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK), one of the DNA dou-ble-strand break repair proteins, could be involved in hypoxic precondi-tioning-induced protective signaling cascades.

  • Previously, we have shown that the small heat shock protein with apparent molecular mass 27 kDa (Hsp27) does not affect the thermal unfolding of F-actin, but effectively prevents aggregation of thermally denatured F-actin [Pivovarova AV, Mikhailova VV, Chernik IS, Chebotareva NA, Levitsky DI & Gusev NB (2005)Biochem Biophys Res Commun331, 1548–1553], and supposed that Hsp27 prevents heat-induced aggregation of F-actin by forming soluble complexes with denatured actin.

  • Cyclobutane-type pyrimidine dimers generated by ultraviolet irradiation of DNA can be cleaved by DNA photolyase. The enzyme-catalysed reaction is believed to be initiated by the light-induced transfer of an electron from the anionic FADH ) chromophore of the enzyme to the pyrimidine dimer. In this contribution, first infrared experiments using a novel E109A mutant ofEscherichia coliDNA photolyase, which is catalytically active but unable to bind the second cofactor methenyltetrahydrofolate, are described....

  • The adoption of Machine Translation technology for commercial applications is hampered by the lack of trust associated with machine-translated output. In this paper, we describe TrustRank, an MT system enhanced with a capability to rank the quality of translation outputs from good to bad. This enables the user to set a quality threshold, granting the user control over the quality of the translations. We quantify the gains we obtain in translation quality, and show that our solution works on a wide variety of domains and language pairs. ...

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to the induction of Combinatory Categorial Grammars (CCGs) by their potential affinity with the Genetic Algorithms (GAs). Specifically, CCGs utilize a rich yet compact notation for lexical categories, which combine with relatively few grammatical rules, presumed universal. Thus, the search for a CCG consists in large part in a search for the appropriate categories for the data-set’s lexical items. We present and evaluates a system utilizing a simple GA to successively search and improve on such assignments. ...

  • This paper presents SemFrame, a system that induces frame semantic verb classes from WordNet and LDOCE. Semantic frames are thought to have significant potential in resolving the paraphrase problem challenging many languagebased applications. When compared to the handcrafted FrameNet, SemFrame achieves its best recall-precision balance with 83.2% recall (based on SemFrame's coverage of FrameNet frames) and 73.8% precision (based on SemFrame verbs’ semantic relatedness to frame-evoking verbs). The next best performing semantic verb classes achieve 56.9% recall and 55.0% precision. ...
