Text analysis

This research aims to enhance comprehension of legal texts by applying Talmy's (2017) threestep process for identifying and integrating referents from contextual cues into linguistic forms. Drawing on pragmatics, discourse analysis, cognitive semantics, and Talmy's force dynamics notion, a qualitative content analysis investigates the cognitive processes readers use for cue detection, attention allocation, and semantic integration when reading court indictments.

This study further supports this theory by the analysis of the posters of fifteen top grossing American romantic comedies. Based on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s framework (2006), the research indicates the similarities and differences in using semiotic elements to create meaning and promote the movies. The results not only identify the patterns in designing movie posters but also examine the effectiveness of the framework in analyzing multimodal texts.

The study found that students diverted their attention from linguistic problems to other non-linguistic ones (extralinguistic issues related to extratextual features and general style conventions) after the workshops. This change led to some students’ attempts to avoid word-forword translation and produce more idiomatic translation solutions as shown in the analysis of titles. This paper describes the use of an on-line system to do word-sense ambiguity resolution and content analysis of English paragraphs, using a system of semantic analysis programmed in Q32 LISP 1.5. The system of semantic analysis comprises dictionary codings for the text words, coded forms of permitted message, and rules producing message forms in combination on the basis of a criterion of semantic closeness. A study by Kenneth E. Harper indicates that word order in Russian scientific writing is sufficiently similar to that of English to permit word-for-word translation from Russian to English.
