  • This compensation technique bought us back 14 % of loss recall and an increase of 9 % accuracy over the baseline system. Finally, wrapping the retrieval system as an info service guarantees its practical deployment, asour target audiences are the majority of farmers in developing countries who are unable to reach modern farming information and knowledge.

  • In 2005, the baseline country studies pointed to a lack of connection between advocacy for reduction of maternal mortality in national-level planning and the necessary linkage to effective programmatic responses through resource allocation, capacity- building and human-resource development. The 2011 case-studies suggest that this problem persists: despite a closing of the gap between policy and programmes, the limited progress with improving health outcomes has shown the importance of strengthening health systems – particularly for maternal and newborn health.

  • This paper describes initial work on Deep Read, an automated reading comprehension system that accepts arbitrary text input (a story) and answers questions about it. We have acquired a corpus of 60 development and 60 test stories of 3rd to 6 th grade material; each story is followed by short-answer questions (an answer key was also provided).

  • We start by considering the role of sovereign debt problems. Are the baseline results picking up greater-than-expected effects of sovereign debt problems rather than the effects of fiscal consolidation? As Table 2 reports, the results are robust to controlling for the initial (end- 2009) government-debt-to-GDP ratio, for the initial fiscal-balance-to-GDP ratio, and for the initial structural fiscal-balance-to-GDP ratio.

  • Techniques for automatically training modules of a natural language generator have recently been proposed, but a fundamental concern is whether the quality of utterances produced with trainable components can compete with hand-crafted template-based or rulebased approaches. In this paper We experimentally evaluate a trainable sentence planner for a spoken dialogue system by eliciting subjective human judgments.

  • This paper presents a new model of anaphoric processing that utilizes the establishment of coherence relations between clauses in a discourse. We survey data that comprises a currently stalemated argument over whether VP-ellipsis is an inherently syntactic or inherently semantic phenomenon, and show that the data can be handled within a uniform discourse processing architecture. This architecture, which revises the dichotomy between ellipsis vs.

  • The dataset used for this paper comes from the baseline data of the evaluation of Familias en Acción, a program implemented by the Colombian government to foster human capital accumulation among poor children living in small municipalities. The program, modeled after the Mexican PROGRESA, provides monetary transfers to mothers in beneficiary families, conditional on having completed some requirements: (a) children under seven should be taken to growth and development check-ups, (b) children between 7 and 17 years old should regularly attend school.

  • We present a novel approach to Information Presentation (IP) in Spoken Dialogue Systems (SDS) using a data-driven statistical optimisation framework for content planning and attribute selection. First we collect data in a Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ) experiment and use it to build a supervised model of human behaviour. This forms a baseline for measuring the performance of optimised policies, developed from this data using Reinforcement Learning (RL) methods.

  • In this paper we study unsupervised word sense disambiguation (WSD) based on sense definition. We learn low-dimensional latent semantic vectors of concept definitions to construct a more robust sense similarity measure wmfvec. Experiments on four all-words WSD data sets show significant improvement over the baseline WSD systems and LDA based similarity measures, achieving results comparable to state of the art WSD systems.

  • In this paper, we present a simple and effective method to address the issue of how to generate diversified translation systems from a single Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) engine for system combination. Our method is based on the framework of boosting. First, a sequence of weak translation systems is generated from a baseline system in an iterative manner.

  • We use machine learners trained on a combination of acoustic confidence and pragmatic plausibility features computed from dialogue context to predict the accuracy of incoming n-best recognition hypotheses to a spoken dialogue system. Our best results show a 25% weighted f-score improvement over a baseline system that implements a “grammar-switching” approach to context-sensitive speech recognition.

  • We present the results of an experiment on extending the automatic method of Machine Translation evaluation BLUE with statistical weights for lexical items, such as tf.idf scores. We show that this extension gives additional information about evaluated texts; in particular it allows us to measure translation Adequacy, which, for statistical MT systems, is often overestimated by the baseline BLEU method. The proposed model uses a single human reference translation, which increases the usability of the proposed method for practical purposes. ...

  • This document provides guidance on how to design a local area network (LAN) for a Business Ready Branch or autonomous Business Ready Office where corporate services such as voice, video, and data are converged onto a single office network. This document provides an overview of LAN architecture. Because of the numerous combinations of features, platforms, and customer requirements that make up an office design, this version of the design guide focuses on various LAN design discussions for voice and data services without making specific design recommendations.

  • This paper presents a probabilistic framework, QARLA, for the evaluation of text summarisation systems. The input of the framework is a set of manual (reference) summaries, a set of baseline (automatic) summaries and a set of similarity metrics between summaries. It provides i) a measure to evaluate the quality of any set of similarity metrics, ii) a measure to evaluate the quality of a summary using an optimal set of similarity metrics, and iii) a measure to evaluate whether the set of baseline summaries is reliable or may produce biased results. ...

  • Individual utterances often serve multiple communicative purposes in dialogue. We present a data-driven approach for identification of multiple dialogue acts in single utterances in the context of dialogue systems with limited training data. Our approach results in significantly increased understanding of user intent, compared to two strong baselines.

  • We investigate the influence of information status (IS) on constituent order in German, and integrate our findings into a loglinear surface realisation ranking model. We show that the distribution of pairs of IS categories is strongly asymmetric. Moreover, each category is correlated with morphosyntactic features, which can be automatically detected. We build a loglinear model that incorporates these asymmetries for ranking German string realisations from input LFG F-structures.

  • We propose a language model based on a precise, linguistically motivated grammar (a hand-crafted Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar) and a statistical model estimating the probability of a parse tree. The language model is applied by means of an N-best rescoring step, which allows to directly measure the performance gains relative to the baseline system without rescoring. To demonstrate that our approach is feasible and beneficial for non-trivial broad-domain speech recognition tasks, we applied it to a simplified German broadcast-news transcription task.

  • This paper deals with the task of finding generally applicable substitutions for a given input term. We show that the output of a distributional similarity system baseline can be filtered to obtain terms that are not simply similar but frequently substitutable. Our filter relies on the fact that when two terms are in a common entailment relation, it should be possible to substitute one for the other in their most frequent surface contexts.

  • Operating systems and software are written to be functional and easy to use and install. Otherwise vendors will have a hard time selling them ;-) Unfortunately they generally come configured insecure (or less secure that possible) out of the box. There are two important terms we need to understand in regards to securing systems out of the box.
