Nuclear receptors (NRs) are ligand-regulated, DNA-binding transcription factors that function in the chromatin environment of the nucleus to alter the expression of subsets of hormone-responsive genes. It is clear that chromatin, rather than being a passive player, has a profound effect on both transcriptional repression and activation mediated by NRs.

Thec-secretase complex mediates the final proteolytic event in Alzheimer’s disease amyloid-bbiogenesis. This membrane complex of presenilin, ante-rior pharynx defective, nicastrin, and presenilin enhancer-2 cleaves the C-terminal 99-amino acid fragment of the amyloid precursor protein intra-membranously atc-sites to form C-terminally heterogeneous amyloid-b and cleaves at ane-site to release the intracellular domain or e-C-terminal fragment.

Nociceptors are specialized nerve fibers that transmit noxious pain stimuli to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. A subset of nociceptors, the nonpepti-dergic C-fibers, is characterized by its reactivity for the plant isolectin B4 (IB4) from Griffonia simplicifolia. The molecular nature of the IB4-reactive glycoconjugate, although used as a neuroanatomical marker for more than a decade, has remained unknown.

The presenilin proteins are required for intramembrane cleavage of a subset of type 1 membrane proteins including the Alzheimer’s disease amyloid precursor protein. Previous studies indicate presenilin proteins form enzymatically act-ive high molecular mass complexes consisting of hetero-dimers of N- and C-terminal fragments in association with nicastrin, presenilin enhancer-2 and anterior pharynx defective-1 proteins.

Bowen’s formula relates the Hausdorff dimension of a conformal repeller to the zero of a ‘pressure’ function. We present an elementary, self-contained proof to show that Bowen’s formula holds for C 1 conformal repellers. We consider time-dependent conformal repellers obtained as invariant subsets for sequences of conformally expanding maps within a suitable class.

We prove that for any s 0 the majority of C s linear cocycles over any hyperbolic (uniformly or not) ergodic transformation exhibit some nonzero Lyapunov exponent: this is true for an open dense subset of cocycles and, actually, vanishing Lyapunov exponents correspond to codimension-∞. This open dense subset is described in terms of a geometric condition involving the behavior of the cocycle over certain heteroclinic orbits of the transformation.

We show that every subset of SL2 (Z/pZ) grows rapidly when it acts on itself by the group operation. It follows readily that, for every set of generators A of SL2 (Z/pZ), every element of SL2 (Z/pZ) can be expressed as a product of at most O((log p)c ) elements of A ∪ A−1 , where c and the implied constant are absolute. 1. Introduction 1.1. Background. Let G be a finite group. Let A ⊂ G be a set of generators of G. By definition, every g ∈ G can be expressed as a product of elements of...

Let f be a real-valued function on a compact set in Rn , and let m be a positive integer. We show how to decide whether f extends to a Cm function on Rn . Introduction Continuing from [F2], we answer the following question (“Whitney’s extension problem”; see [hW2]). Question 1. Let ϕ be a real-valued function defined on a compact subset E of Rn . How can we tell whether there exists F ∈ C m (Rn ) with F = ϕ on E? Here, m ≥ 1 is given, and C m (Rn ) denotes the space...

We prove that if A is a subset of at least cn1/2 elements of {1, . . . , n}, where c is a sufficiently large constant, then the collection of subset sums of A contains an arithmetic progression of length n. As an application, we confirm a long standing conjecture of Erd˝s and Folkman on complete sequences. o

A C 1-generic dichotomy for diffeomorphisms: Weak forms of hyperbolicity or infinitely many sinks or sources By C. Bonatti, L. J. D´ ıaz, and E. R. Pujals* A Ricardo Ma˜e (1948–1995), por todo su trabajo n´ Abstract We show that, for every compact n-dimensional manifold, n ≥ 1, there is a residual subset of Diff1 (M ) of diffeomorphisms for which the homoclinic class of any periodic saddle of f verifies one of the following two possibilities: Either it is contained in the closure of an infinite set of sinks or sources (Newhouse phenomenon), or it presents some weak form of...

We previously reported the construction and activity of a humanized, bispecific diabody (hEx3) that recruited T cells towards an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) positive tumor. Herein, we describe the construction of a second functional, fully humanized, anti-EGFR bispecific diabody that recruits another subset of lymphocyte effectors, the natural killer cells, to EGFR-expressing tumor cells.
