  • The efficiency of a book is like that of a man, in one important respect: its attitude toward its subject is the first source of its power. A book may be full of good ideas well expressed, but if its writer views his subject from the wrong angle even his excellent advice may prove to be ineffective. This book stands or falls by its authors' attitude toward its subject. If the best way to teach oneself or others to speak effectively in public is to fill the mind with rules, and to set up fixed standards for the interpretation of thought, the utterance of language,...

  • The main objectives of this study were to examine the effects of coastal eutrophication on fi sh communities, and on local recreational fi shery and commercial pikeperch fi shery on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The study focused on freshwater species, as they live their entire life cycle in the most eutrophied areas, i.e., the archipelago and inner bays. Freshwater species are important for the very popular recreational fi shery, forming the bulk of the annual total catch.

  • Price changes and the surpluses or shortages of specific products are often first noted in wholesale channels. The wholesaler to a certain extent determines the market price. If more pork is offered through trade channels than consumers will take at a given price the wholesaler promptly reduces his price bid to packing houses; prices paid for live hogs on the one hand, and for wholesale cuts of pork on the other, will decline. Reduced prices to consumers are thus made possible, and a larger supply of pork will be absorbed. An opposite action will occur,...

  • The operational procedures of the Bank of Greece underwent major changes during the 1990s. These shifts in operational strategy made interest rates the main tool of monetary policy for the first time in Greece. This paper examines the effects of changes in the bank’s operational interest rates on market interest rates at eight maturities and for different operational regimes. A major feature of our study is the application of the event study methodology used in finance, which has not been employed in any previous study on this subject.

  • This study presents a procedure for calculating the change of the safety factor for unsaturated slopes of homogenous, residual soils suffering from rainfall infiltration within Khanh Vinh district, Khanh Hòa province. Rainfall is supposed as a main trigger caused failure of the potential sliding slopes. Rainwater into the slope due to infiltration caused an increase in moisture content and negative pore water pressure; a decrease in matric suction and in shear strength on the failure surface.

  • In recent decades, a lot of efforts has been spent on investigation of metal borohydrides, which can potentially serve as advanced hydrogen storage materials for mobile applications. In this research, we investigate the structure changes under high pressure of the compounds MBH4 (M = K, Na) as important borohydrides in hydrogen technologies, using ABINIT simulation package based on density functional theory (DFT) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The pressure is in a wide range of 0 GPa to 40 GPa.

  • Effect of the pulse electric current on mechanical properties of an ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) is experimentally investigated. A single pulse of electric current with a short duration of 0.36 sec is applied to the specimen under tensile plastic loading. The experimental result showed that flow stress of the UHSS nearly instantly drops at moment of electric current, following strain hardening until necking of the specimen. Uniform elongation completely depends on the pulsing strain, while ultimate tensile strength slightly changes after electric current.

  • This paper simulates the circumstances on changing D/H aspect ratio of the runner samples, specifically in 03 cases including D/H = 0.9, D/H = 1 and D/H = 1.1 to evaluate the working capacity and efficiency of the turbine, and then to establish the curves on power characteristics of H-type Darrieus turbine. Based on that, we can select the runner sample working better than the remaining samples.

  • The significance of these changes was discussed in relation to the FSP, the activity of which was barely detectable. MC values above the FSP stimulate and decrease the retention of preservative in the wood voids, whereas MC values below the FSP influence the preservative uptake due to the effect of the voids available in wood.

  • The concept of change management has been evident for centuries. However, it has dramatically increased in the twenty first century as forces driving change are evolving at an increasing speed and the effects of a worldwide recession can be felt. Throughout the years organisations have put in place various methods and methodologies to manage change which include; structural, process and technological change. However, it is interesting to note that despite the fact that change is a topical subject amongst academics and consultants, only one third of all change initiatives succeed.

  • The state of aquatic ecosystems reflects the general state of the biosphere. The situation in the biosphere affected by anthropogenic factors was characterized as “a slow explosion” (Fedorov 1987). The global change in the biosphere and climatic system of the Earth is a manifestation of this “slow explosion” (World Resources 1990–1991, Izrael et al. 1992).
