This book is dedicated to my accent reduction students who came to the United States from all parts of the globe. Their drive to excel, passion for learning, amazing work ethic, and belief in the American dream have inspired me to write this book. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” Thanks to all of the supportive and extremely professional people at Barron’s: Dimitry Popow, my editor; Wayne Barr for seeking me out to write this book; and Veronica Douglas for her support. I am enormously...

A philosophical study of morality is very different from a sociological or anthropological study, or a study from the perspective of biology or psychology. One important difference is that in moral philosophy we do not distance ourselves from our own moral views in the way we would if we were engaged in a study of one of these other kinds. We do not take the fact that people, including ourselves, have moral views as merely a datum to be explained.

The main concern of this book is scepticism about moral responsibility. By “moral responsibility” I understand that property of human agents by virtue of which they truly and objectively deserve moral praise or blame for some of their actions. We are naturally non-sceptical about this property. Even philosophical sceptics tend to praise or blame people spontaneously for some of their actions, though they may try to recoil from these spontaneous reactions after reminding themselves of their own reflectively acquired scepticism....

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the ethical debate on cloning tended to blur the lines of separation between the church and state, to an extent that had not been so obvious at the international level for some time. This highly charged issue challenges the bases of many religious beliefs and places science and religion at loggerheads. Questions were raised such as, whether it is appropriate to allow for the creation and destruction of embryos for the sole purpose of harvesting stem cells which may save the life of a sick person is at the very heart of this debate.

There is no doubt that professional and ethical practice is a potent and dynamic area. Changes in research and practice, legislation, and professional and ethical guidelines may all mean incremental and paradigm shifts. In addition, changing professional codes of practice, culture, and personal belief systems, as well as the demands of clinical governance, lifelong learning and the likelihood of statutory registration, will also impact upon professional and ethical practice.

By clearly stating and understanding the core beliefs that an organization has or wants to adopt about ethical issues such as honesty, integrity, dignity of individuals, or caring about others, policies that are straightforward and easily implementable can be designed. By clearly thinking through a position on the environment, whether to comply with the law or to leave the earth better than we found it, we can begin marshaling the resources to realize these basic beliefs.

Legal and ethical questions of control, supervision and consent in connection with such smart-home technology have in this connection played an important role for us. According to "Eldres IT-forum" (an IT-forum for the elderly) “elderly people” are those above 55 years, and they represent one fourth of the Norwegian population. The elderly are a heterogeneous group with very different needs and qualifications. Their economic capability, degree of education, their health and degree of functional ability greatly vary.
