Doctoral thesis of Philosophy: Modelling of inhomogeneous magnetic fields in electromagnetic devices
This thesis derives closed form equations to describe electromagnetic device characteristics for a toroid, solenoid and a case study induction machine. By considering stored magnetic field energy, this approach allows the relationship between electrical, magnetic and kinetic energy to be quantified and analyzed in ways that allows improved accuracy compared with conventional magnetic circuit modeling methods. This thesis also provides insights into how geometric parameters impact energy transfer and operational characteristics of electromagnetic devices.

A Pierre Deligne, a l ’occasion de son 60-i`me anniversaire, ` e en t´moignage de profonde admiration e Abstract If V is a smooth projective variety defined over a local field K with fi¯ nite residue field, so that its ´tale cohomology over the algebraic closure K is e supported in codimension 1, then the mod p reduction of a projective regular model carries a rational point. As a consequence, if the Chow group of 0-cycles of V over a large algebraically closed field is trivial, then the mod p reduction of a projective regular model carries a rational...

Let X be a smooth quasiprojective subscheme of Pn of dimension m ≥ 0 over Fq . Then there exist homogeneous polynomials f over Fq for which the intersection of X and the hypersurface f = 0 is smooth. In fact, the set of such f has a positive density, equal to ζX (m + 1)−1 , where ζX (s) = ZX (q −s ) is the zeta function of X. An analogue for regular quasiprojective schemes over Z is proved, assuming the abc conjecture and another conjecture. 1. Introduction The classical Bertini theorems say that if a subscheme...

For n 2, let PG(n, 2) be the finite projective geometry of dimension n over F2, the field of order 2. The elements or points of PG(n, 2) are the one-dimensional vector subspaces of Fn+1 2 ; the lines of PG(n, 2) are the two-dimensional vector subspaces of Fn+1 2 . Each such one-dimensional subspace {0, x} is represented by the non-zero vector x contained in it. For ease of notation, if {e0, e1, . . . , en} is a basis of Fn+1 2 and x is an element of PG(n, 2), then we denote x by a1 . . .as, where x = ea1 +·...
