  • Decolorization from synthetic wastewater containing Reactive Red 24 (RR24) using gamma Cobalt-60 ray was investigated. The influence of the irradiation dose, initial pH, initial dye and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration were evaluated. The pH effect has proved that lower decolorization efficiency was observed in alkaline medium as compared to the neutral and acid medium. While color removal efficiency increased with increasing absorbed dose.

  • Brachytherapy Brachytherapy is the direct implantation of radioactive sources into the prostate. It is based on the principle that the deposition of radiation energy in tissues decreases as a function of the square of the distance from the source (Chap. 81). The goal is to deliver intensive irradiation to the prostate, minimizing the exposure of the surrounding tissues. The current standard technique achieves a more homogeneous dose distribution by placing seeds according to a customized template based on CT and ultrasonographic assessment of the tumor and computer-optimized dosimetry.

  • Colloidal silver nanoparticles were synthesized by Co-60 ray irradiation of Ag+ in aqueous solution containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as stabilizer and 0.5 M ethyl alcohol as free radical (OH• ) scavenger. The effect of Ag+ concentration which varied from 1 to 50 mM on the saturated conversion dose (D) of Ag+ into Ag determined by UV-vis spectroscopy and the size of Ag nanoparticles characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were investigated. The dependence of D (kGy) and average size (d, nm) of Ag nanoparticles on Ag+ concentration was found out to be as: D (kGy) = 0.

  • This report presents the estimation of the activation energy (E) values from the thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves showed by the whole glow peak (WGP) method that allows us to distinguish between irradiated and non-irradiated chilli powder samples. The E values of non-irradiated samples maintain 0.65 eV whereas irradiated ones reach 0.84 eV or upper. Furthermore, the E values are obtained from the result of comparison between the chilli powder irradiated with different doses (2, 4, 6 and 8 kGy) stored for 30 days and other unknown chilli powder samples in Vietnam.

  • The thin film PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) - bromocresol green (∼15µm) dosimeter was made for the applications in radiation technology. It’s parameters before and after gamma irradiation have been studied using optical spectrometer UV-VIS JASCO-V-350 and film densitometer X-Rite Model 301. The results show that the specific wavelength of thin film is ∼ 625nm and the sensitivity of thin film dosimeter is ∼ 0.013 × 10−3 Gy−1 in the dose range from 1 kGy to 140 kGy. The dose response function of dosimeter was clearly described by the theory of energy transfer model.

  • The average bubble size increases and the bubble density decreases with an increasing irradiation temperature from 200C to 350C. Both the average size and density of the bubbles increase with an increasing irradiation dose from 2 dpa to 8 dpa. Bubbles with smaller size and lower density were observed in the SMATed samples but not in the un-SMATed samples irradiated in the same conditions, which indicate that GBs play an important role during irradiation, and sink strength increases as grain size decreases.

  • Chitosan with small content in the feed (0.48 - 0.75%) could be selected to prepare shrimp feed-pellet having so high water-stability that met the Standard of Vietnam Ministry of Fisheries 28-TCN 102/1997. The radiation treatment at sterilization doses (20 - 30 kGy) was evaluated as the most practical technology because irradiated chitosan with reduced content of 0.34% has capacity to be prepared feed-pellets as stable as comparable to imported products.

  • The tensile strength of irradiated 3C-SiC, SiC with artificial point defects, SiC with symmetric tilt grain boundaries (GBs), irradiated SiC with GBs are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K. For an irradiated SiC sample, the tensile strength decreases with the increase of irradiation dose. The Young's modulus decreases with the increase of irradiation dose which agrees well with experiment and simulation data.
