  • Decolorization from synthetic wastewater containing Reactive Red 24 (RR24) using gamma Cobalt-60 ray was investigated. The influence of the irradiation dose, initial pH, initial dye and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration were evaluated. The pH effect has proved that lower decolorization efficiency was observed in alkaline medium as compared to the neutral and acid medium. While color removal efficiency increased with increasing absorbed dose.

  • The aim of the present study was extended from obtaining information about the interaction of gamma rays with Makrofol DE 7-2 track detector to introduce the basis that can be used in concerning simple sensor for gamma irradiation and bio-engineering applications. Makrofol polymer samples were irradiated with 1.25 MeV 60Co gamma radiations at doses ranging from 20 to 1000 kG y. The modifications of irradiated samples so induced were analyzed using UV–vis spectrometry, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and the measurements of Vickers’ hardness.

  • The study was carried out to assess and optimize the effect of electron beam doses on inactivation/reduction of Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enterica inoculated in sterile pork salami samples stored at refrigeration temperature (0-4ºC). Pork salami samples were procured from reputed HACCP accredited and ISO 22000 certified pork processing plant, sterilized, inoculated with 108 CFU/mL of Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enterica, packaged in sterile low density polyethylene pouches and subsequently irradiated at the dose rate of 0.5, 0.75, 0.90 and1 kGy.

  • The influence of gamma irradiation on microbial load of different peanut varieties has been assessed. The healthy and mature kernels of peanut variety popular in saurastra region of India viz. GG-20 and TG-37A were naturally contaminated and conditioned with three initial moisture contents (6.0%, 8.5% and 11.0%), w.b. and packed in Poly Propylene (PP) bags of 50μ thickness. Among others, plastic film has been widely used for dosimetry in radiation therapy since its density is quite similar to the equivalent biological materials.   • This research investigates the effect of X-ray irradiation doses on the physico-chemical properties of PVC. PVC samples before and after irradiation are transferred in liquid form by using microwave digestion Mars 6 and then X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) to determine the structural morphological characteristics of PVC samples. XRD results show that the change of PVC polymer structure depends significantly on a radiation dose.

  • Brachytherapy Brachytherapy is the direct implantation of radioactive sources into the prostate. It is based on the principle that the deposition of radiation energy in tissues decreases as a function of the square of the distance from the source (Chap. 81). The goal is to deliver intensive irradiation to the prostate, minimizing the exposure of the surrounding tissues.   • Colloidal silver nanoparticles were synthesized by Co-60 ray irradiation of Ag+ in aqueous solution containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as stabilizer and 0.5 M ethyl alcohol as free radical (OH• ) scavenger.   • This report presents the estimation of the activation energy (E) values from the thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves showed by the whole glow peak (WGP) method that allows us to distinguish between irradiated and non-irradiated chilli powder samples. The E values of non-irradiated samples maintain 0.65 eV whereas irradiated ones reach 0.84 eV or upper. Furthermore, the E values are obtained from the result of comparison between the chilli powder irradiated with different doses (2, 4, 6 and 8 kGy) stored for 30 days and other unknown chilli powder samples in Vietnam.

  • The thin film PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) - bromocresol green (∼15µm) dosimeter was made for the applications in radiation technology. It’s parameters before and after gamma irradiation have been studied using optical spectrometer UV-VIS JASCO-V-350 and film densitometer X-Rite Model 301. The results show that the specific wavelength of thin film is ∼ 625nm and the sensitivity of thin film dosimeter is ∼ 0.013 × 10−3 Gy−1 in the dose range from 1 kGy to 140 kGy. The dose response function of dosimeter was clearly described by the theory of energy transfer model.

  • The average bubble size increases and the bubble density decreases with an increasing irradiation temperature from 200C to 350C. Both the average size and density of the bubbles increase with an increasing irradiation dose from 2 dpa to 8 dpa. Bubbles with smaller size and lower density were observed in the SMATed samples but not in the un-SMATed samples irradiated in the same conditions, which indicate that GBs play an important role during irradiation, and sink strength increases as grain size decreases.

  • Radiotherapy for head and neck cancer typically leads to loss of taste among cancer patients. We proposed that loss of taste after irradiation may be due to continued natural taste cell death, paired with temporary interruption of cell replacement. One possible strategy for averting taste loss may be to reduce epithelial cell death, so that cell proliferation is not interrupted. Protein kinase C delta (PKCδ) has been shown to positively regulate apoptosis and/or cell cycle arrest.
