Compare to other documents, our study was for the first time validated the quality criteria of ICP-MS for analyzing nineteen metal levels in wastewater samples. The application of this method was then tested by analyzing nineteen metal levels in twenty-three wastewater samples in the Tham Luong Canal in Ho Chi Minh City. Based on these results, the correlation of the concentration of these metals in wastewater samples was determined.

Cycads occur in lowland forests and are threatened by their degradation, fragmentation and over-exploitation. Our results indicate that cycad population sizes were very small (less 100 individuals) with high propagules. These increased mating between closely related individuals growing in clumps. The allozyme data show although all studied cycads maintained high levels of genetic diversity, an average of 0.556 (0.491 in C. hoabinhensis to 0.598 in C. chevalieri ), the degree of inbreeding was high.

Cattle is one of the major livestock species for milk production, contributing significantly to the economy of our country and continuous milk production needs regular conception and successful calf crop production. World-over, for dairy economy, there is emphasis on one calf per year per cattle. Successful calving follows survival of the conceptus through embryonic and fetal development.

Our thesis shows the quality of semantic vector representation with random projection and Hyperspace Analogue to Language model under about the researching on Vietnamese. The main goal is how to find semantic similarity or to study synonyms in Vietnamese. We are also interested in the stability of our approach that uses Random Indexing and HAL to represent semantic of words or documents. We build a system to find the synonyms in Vietnamese called Semantic Similarity Finding System. In particular, we also evaluate synonyms resulted from our system.

Power is exercised by groups and institutions. But personally we also exercise power by whether or not we carelessly follow conventional ways of thinking. If our benevolence for an ‘evident discourse’ becomes too large, we risk to blindly follow one’s course. The focus on results, in monetary terms even expressed as ‘value for money’, could be such a discourse.

Nitrogen monoxide (NO) is a cytotoxic effector molecule produced by macrophages that results in Fe mobilization from tumour target cells which inhibits DNA synthesis and mitochondrial respiration. It is well known that NO has a high affinity for Fe, and we showed that NO-mediated Fe mobilization is markedly potentiated by glutathione (GSH) generated by the hexose monophosphate shunt [Watts, R.N. & Richardson, D.R. (2001) J. Biol. Chem. 276, 4724–4732]. We hypothesized that GSH completes the coordination shell of an NO–Fe complex that is released from the cell.

This review summarizes the most recent state of haemo-globin (Hb) research based on the literature and our own results. In particular, an attempt is made to form a unified picture for haemoglobin function by reconciling the cooperative oxygen binding with the stabilization of the bound dioxygen in aqueous solvent. The HbA molecule contains two types ofabcontacts. One type is thea1b2or a2b1 contacts, called sliding contacts, and these are strongly associated with the cooperative binding of O2to the a2b2 tetramer. ...

We have compared the site-by-siteN-glycosylation status of human lactoferrin (Lf) produced in maize, a monocotyle-don, and in tobacco, usedas amodel dicotyledon.Maizeand tobacco plants were stably transformed and recombinant Lf was purified from both seeds and leaves. N-glycopeptides were generated by trypsin digestion of recombinant Lf and purified by reverse-phase HPLC. The N-glycosylation pat-tern of each site was determined by mass spectrometry. Our results indicated that the N-glycosylation patterns of recombinant Lf produced in maize and tobacco share common structural features....

The effects of physiologically relevant hypoxia on the catalytic activity of cytochromecoxidase (CytOX), mito-chondrial gene expression, and both nuclear and mito-chondrial encoded CytOX mRNA levels were investigated in murine monocyte macrophages, mouse C2C12 skeletal myocytes and rat adrenal pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. Our results suggest a coordinated down regulation of mito-chondrial genome-coded CytOX I and II and nuclear genome-codedCytOX IV andVbmRNAs during hypoxia.

Host species specificity of the polyomaviruses simian virus 40 (SV40) and mouse polyomavirus (PyV) has been shown to be determined by the host DNA polymerase a-primase complex involved in the initiation of both viral and host DNA replication. Here we demonstrate that DNA repli-cation of the related human pathogenic polyomavirus JC virus (JCV) can be supportedin vitro by DNA polymerase a-primase of either human or murine origin indicating that the mechanism of its strict species specificity differs from that of SV40 and PyV.

Diacylglycerol (DAG) andproteinkinase C(PKC) isoforms have been implicated in insulin signalling in muscle and fat cells. We evaluated the involvement ofDAGandPKCin the action of insulin in adult rat hepatocytes culturedwith dexa-methasone, but in the absence of serum, for 48 h. Our results show that although insulin stimulated glycolysis and glycogen synthesis, it had no effect on DAG mass or molecular species composition.

An overview of the results of our association studies on candi-date genes for human longevity performed in Italian centenarians will be presented. Many genes gave negative results but others showed a positive or negative association with human longevity. Among the last ones a particular attention will be paid to the genes involved in inflammation (IL-6, IL-10, TGFbeta, TLR-4,PPARgamma2), Insulin/IGF-1 signalling pathway and lipid metabolism (Apolipoproteins, CEPT).

Transglutaminases form a large family of intracellular and extracellular enzymes that catalyse the Ca 2+ -dependent post-translational modification of proteins. Despite significant advances in our understanding of the biolo-gical role of most mammalian transglutaminase isoforms, recent findings suggest new scenarios, most notably for the ubiquitous tissue transglutami-nase.

We report on the results obtained by measuring the stoi-chiometry of antenna polypeptides in Photosystem I (PSI) fromArabidopsis thaliana. This analysis was performed by quantification of Coomassie blue binding to individual LHCI polypeptides, fractionation by SDS/PAGE, and by the use of recombinant light harvesting complex of Photo-system I (Lhca) holoproteins as a standard reference. Our results show that a single copy of each Lhca1–4 polypeptide is present in Photosystem I.

The dementia familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB) is caused by point mutations in the neuroserpin gene.We have shown a correlation between the predicted effect of the mutation and the number of intracerebral inclusions, and an inverse relationshipwith the age of onset of disease. Our previous work has shown that the intraneuronal inclusions in FENIB result from the sequential interactionbetween the reactive centre loopofone neuroserpin molecule withb-sheet A of the next. ...
