  • In this study, 1000 data sets randomly generated by the FEM through iterations are used for the training process to get optimal weights. Based on these obtained optimal weights, beam behaviors under the changes in material distribution through thickness could then be predicted. In this model, the ANN’s inputs are the gradation index of the power-law distribution and thickness, while the outputs are compliance and beam displacements. The computed results are verified against those derived from the FEM.

  • Vibration analysis of multi-span bidirectional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) beams subjected to a moving load is presented by using a high-order deformation theory. The material properties of the beam are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness and longitudinal directions by a power-law distribution. The dynamic response of the beam is computed with the aid of the Newmark method.

  • Aerostatic bearings are ones which carry loads with nearly frictionless movement, thanks to external supply of pressurized air. The bearing pad and guide surfaces are kept apart and lubricated by a micrometer-thick compressed air film with a load capacity depending mainly on the pressure distribution. The flow of air through the gap complies with the Navier-Stokes equations and conservation of mass and energy.

  • Investigation of electron absorbed dose distribution inside a Lo Ren star apple irradiated by 10 Mev electron beam has been performed based on Monte Carlo simulation using the MCNP4c code. Dose uniformity ratio (DUR) inside the Lo Ren star apple has also been evaluated and optimized using additional medium density fiberboards (MDF) outside the carton box. The DUR inside the fruit without using the additional MDF boards was estimated of about 2.47, which is excessively high for fruit irradiation compared to a desirable value of less than 1.5.

  • In this paper, a two-dimensional functionally graded sandwich (2D-FGSW) beam model formed from three constituent materials is proposed and its free vibration analysis is carried out for the first time. The beam consists of three layers, a homogeneous core and two skin layers of 2D-FGM. The material properties of the skin layers are considered to vary in both the thickness and longitudinal directions by power gradation laws.

  • The quasi-3D shear deformation theory, which takes the thickness stretching effect into account, is adopted to formulate a finite element formulation for computing vibration characteristics. The accuracy of the derived formulation is confirmed through a comparison study. The numerical result reveals that the foundation supporting area plays an important role on the vibration behavior of the plates, and the effect of the layer thickness ratio on the frequencies is governed by the supporting area.

  • The present paper presents the evaluation of three-dimensional (3D) stress distributions of shell structures in the large displacement and rotation fields. The proposed geometrical nonlinear model is based on a combination of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). Besides, a Newton-Raphson linearization scheme is adopted to compute the geometrical nonlinear equations, which are constrained using the arc-length path-following method.

  • Fluid hydrodynamic fixed abrasive grinding (FHFAG) is now evolving into a promising finishing method underpinning the major advances across grinding and lapping sciences. While the advances have been startling, the key unmet challenge to date is the theoretical basis of removal function. Here, we approach this challenge by presenting a fully coupled flow deformation model. Given the separation function on microchannel from the grits fixed on the grinding pad, hydrodynamic pressure distribution with many dynamic pressure peaks and basic film thickness can be described theoretically.

  • In this work, the equipment was used to investigate the distribution of lithium (7Li) and boron (11B) in the outer oxide at the bow contact area. Depth profiling in the clad oxide at the opposite side of the rod to the point of contact, which is considered to have experienced normal operating conditions and which has a typical oxide thickness, evidenced levels of ∼10–20 ppm 7Li and a 11B content reaching hundreds of ppm in the outer parts of the oxide, largely in agreement with the expected range of Li and B clad oxide concentrations from previous studies.
