  • In this paper we first propose a new statistical parsing model, which is a generative model of lexicalised context-free grammar. We then extend the model to include a probabilistic treatment of both subcategorisation and wh-movement. Results on Wall Street Journal text show that the parser performs at 88.1/87.5% constituent precision/recall, an average improvement of 2.3% over (Collins 96). is derived from the analysis given in Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar (Gazdar et al. 95).

  • Mathematical finance and financial engineering have been rapidly expanding fields of science over the past three decades. The main reason behind this phenomenon has been the success of sophisticated quantitative methodologies in helping professionals to manage financial risks. The newly developed credit derivatives industry has grown around the need to handle credit risk, which is one of the fundamental factors of financial risk. In recent years, we have witnessed a tremendous acceleration in research efforts aimed at better apprehending, modeling and hedging of this kind of risk ...

  • The use of a combustion engine to motivate a car has been questioned in recent times due to the increasing concern of warming. As a result of this, the concept of driving a car with an electric engine has become of particular interest. Dr. Geoff Walker and his PhD students are working on the creation of the Universitys own electric car. This thesis project is focused on deriving a control scheme to drive an induction machine that could be applied to the electric car.

  • A processing department is an organizational unit where work is performed on a prod- uct and where materials, labor, or overhead costs are added to the product. For example, a Nalley’s potato chip factory might have three processing departments—one for preparing potatoes, one for cooking, and one for inspecting and packaging. A brick factory might have two processing departments—one for mixing and molding clay into brick form and one for firing the molded brick. Some products and services may go through a number of processing departments, while others may...

  • In this paper we prove the global existence and uniqueness (regularity) of strong solutions to the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations, which model large scale ocean and atmosphere dynamics. 1. Introduction Large scale dynamics of oceans and atmosphere is governed by the primitive equations which are derived from the Navier-Stokes equations, with rotation, coupled to thermodynamics and salinity diffusion-transport equations, which account for the buoyancy forces and stratification effects under the Boussinesq approximation. ...

  • I wrote this text for a one semester course at the sophomore-junior level. Our experience with students taking our junior physics courses is that even if they’ve had the mathematical prerequisites, they usually need more experience using the mathematics to handle it efficiently and to possess usable intuition about the processes involved. If you’ve seen infinite series in a calculus course, you may have no idea that they’re good for anything.

  • It may be noted in this connection, on the one hand, that a population which is in no degree habituated to the modern industrial process is unable to adapt its mode of life to the requirements of this method of supplying human wants, and so can derive but little benefit, and possibly great discomfort, from a forcible intrusion of the machine industry; as, for instance, many of the outlying barbarian peoples with whom the Western industrial culture is now enforcing a close contact.

  • General meeting. An Annual General Meeting (AGM) of shareholders must be held at least once in a calendar year and the time between two AGMs should not exceed 15 months (extendable up to three months with approval, except for first AGM). A company may hold its first AGM within 18 months from the date of incorporation and, in such a case, it will not be necessary to hold an AGM in the year of incorporation or the following year. Among the business to be addressed at an AGM is approval by the shareholders of the audited financial statements for the...

  • Areas for Improvement: The audit assessment points to numerous areas for potential improvement. However, given its size, resources, and the fact that it is functioning reasonably well under the current model, the hypothetical organization chooses three main areas for development and improvement. The top priority, because it affects all others, is making sure that communications resources are a distinct budget line item in every grant proposal. The organization will also develop a communications strategy for the overall organization rather than only for specific projects.

  • The three year term of the strategy is too short to measure significant changes in nutritional status and mortality as outcome indicators. Instead, the results matrix gives details of the output and outcome (impact) and activity (process) indicators and their source of verification against which effectiveness of the strategy will be measured. The progress made in the implementation of the strategy will be reviewed and updated on an annual basis.

  • Rapid expansion in international credit bears watching because, in many boom-bust credit cycles in the past, such credit tended to grow faster than overall credit during the boom.5 We illustrate this broad finding with data from several European countries that have suffered credit booms and busts since 2000. Then, we draw a parallel with countries that were caught up in the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. By international credit, we refer to three components of total bank credit, the first two of which are types of cross-border credit.
