In this study, we isolated a 25-kDa novel snake venom protein, designated ablomin, from the venom of the Japanese Mamushi snake (Agkistrodon blomhoffi). The amino-acid sequence of this protein was determined by peptide sequencing and cDNA cloning. The deduced sequence showed high similarity to helothermine from the Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum horridum), which blocks voltage-gated calcium and potassium channels, and ryanodine receptors. Ablomin blocked contraction of rat tail arterial smooth muscle elicited by high K+-induced depolarization in the 0.

A novel lectin was isolated from leaves of the Japanese cycad,Cycas revolutaThunb. (gymnosperm), and its char-acteristics including amino acid composition, molecular mass, carbohydrate binding specificity and partial amino acid sequences were examined. The inhibition analysis of hemagglutinating activity with various sugars showed that the lectin has a carbohydrate-binding specificity similar to those of mannose recognizing, jacalin-related lectins.

An RBCC (RING finger, B-box, and coiled-coil) protein was identified that belongs to the superfamilyof zinc-binding proteins and is specifically expressed in the gill of eel, Anguilla japonica. Euryhaline fishes such as eels canmigrate between freshwater and seawater, which is considered to be accomplished by efficient remodeling of the architecture and function of the gill, a major osmoregulatory organ.

A search has been initiated for lead inhibitors of the non-structural protein 3 (NS3)-associated NTPase/helicase activities of hepatitis C virus,the related West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus and the human mitochondrial Suv3 enzyme. Random screening of a broad range of unre-lated low-molecular mass compounds,employing both RNA and DNA substrates, revealed that 4,5,6,7-tetra-bromobenzotriazole (TBBT) hitherto known as a potent highly selective inhibitor of protein kinase 2,is a good inhibitor of the helicase,but not NTPase,activity of hepa-titis C virus NTPase/helicase. ...

The cysteine-rich peptide hepcidin is known to be an antimicrobial peptide and iron transport regulator that has been found in both fish and mam-mals. Recently, we found two different types (designated Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2) of hepcidin cDNA in the Japanese flounder,Paralichthys oliva-ceus, by expressed sequence tag analysis. The identity of amino acid sequences between Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2 was 51%. The Hep-JF1 and Hep-JF2 genes both consist of three exons and two introns, and both exist as single copies in the genome. ...

In the majority of hypophosphatasia patients, reductions in the serum lev-els of alkaline phosphatase activity are caused by various missense muta-tions in the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) gene. A unique frame-shift mutation due to a deletion of T at cDNA number 1559 [TNSALP (1559delT)] has been reported only in Japanese patients with high allele frequency.

In birds, the egg envelope surrounding the oocyte prior to ovulation is called the perivitelline membrane and it plays important roles in fertiliza-tion. In a previous study we demonstrated that one of the components of the perivitelline membrane, ZP3, which is secreted from the ovarian granu-losa cells, specifically interacts with ZP1, another constituent that is synthe-sized in the liver of Japanese quail.

Aninterleukin-7 (IL-7) gene has been cloned and sequenced within the Japanese pufferfish,Takifugu rubripes(Fugu), providing the first conclusive evidence for the existence of IL-7 in teleosts. The IL-7 cDNA was com-posed of 1438 bp, with a 117 bp 5¢-UTR, an 826 bp 3¢-UTR containing two mRNA instability motifs, and a 498 bp ORF which translates into a peptide of 166 amino acid residues.

cDNAs of the ecdysone receptor and the retinoid X receptor were cloned from the Japanese scorpion Liocheles australasiae, and the amino acid sequences were deduced. The full-length cDNA sequences of theL. austra-lasiae ecdysone receptor and the L. australasiaeretinoid X receptor were 2881 and 1977 bp in length, respectively, and the open reading frames encoded proteins of 560 and 414 amino acids. The amino acid sequence of the L.

The mollusk shell is a hard tissue consisting of calcium carbonate and organic matrices. The organic matrices are considered to play important roles in shell formation. We have previously identified a prismatic layer-specific protein named Prismalin-14, which consists of 105 amino acid resi-dues and includes four structurally characteristic regions;

Type III antifreeze protein is naturally expressed as a mixture of sulfopro-pyl-Sephadex (SP) and quaternary aminoethyl-Sephadex (QAE)-binding isoforms, whose sequence identity is approximately 55%. We studied the ice-binding properties of a SP isoform (nfeAFP6) and the differences from those of a QAE isoform (nfeAFP8); both of these isoforms have been identified from the Japanese fish Zoarces elongatus Kner.
