Trophic status

The trophic levels in urban lakes are typically based on the forms of nutrition and phytoplankton communities in the lakes. In this study, comparisons between eutrophication indices and the water quality index (VN-WQI) were used to classify the water quality of 20 lakes in Hanoi, Vietnam.

This study, the first such attempt in Turkey, aimed to investigate the distribution of diatom species related to the variation of total phosphorus (TP) in eight basins to determine trophic weight and indicator values of diatom species and to develop the Trophic Index-Turkey (TIT) for assessing the ecological status of freshwaters. The distribution of the diatom species in 225 running water bodies from 8 basins of Turkey was determined in 2014 (summer and fall) and 2015 (spring and summer) in association with TP variation.

Within the scope of the European Union Water Framework Directive, diatom assemblages as biological quality components were used to evaluate the ecological status of 12 surface waters in the Araban-Yavuzeli catchment between October 2013 and October 2014. A total of 75 diatom species were identified during the study period. Amphora ovalis, Denticula elegans, Gomphonema parvulum, Gomphonema truncatum, and Navicula cryptocephala were commonly observed.

Biodiversity of diatoms and applicability of diatom indices in biomonitoring based on littoral epiphytic samples of Lake Modrac were investigated. Diatoms were taken mostly from Phragmites australis stems in 2017, during which physical and chemical parameters of the water were measured. A total of 85 diatom taxa were identified. Gomphonema (13 spp.), Navicula (11 spp.), and Nitzschia (8 spp.) were the most abundant genera.

This study evaluated the phytoplankton communities based on functional groups to obtain information about the water quality of Lake İznik, Turkey. The phytoplankton consisted of 103 taxa, classified in 12 phytoplankton functional groups (PFGs), with dominancy of 5 species, Chrysosporum ovalisporum, Dolichospermum mendotae, Planktothrix rubescens, Fragilaria capucina, and Mougeotia sp. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H’) was calculated and results ranged between 0.41 and 2.47.

In the present study, the Biological diatom index (BDI) and the Trophic diatom index (TDI) were calculated for the assessment the ecological status and the water quality of the Sai Gon river in comparison with the physico-chemical variables. In addition, a multivariate method was used to elucidate the main environmental variables driving the diatom community. A total of 87 diatom species were identified and used to calculate the diatom indices.

Temporal changes in the species composition, seasonal abundance, and diversity of net phytoplankton (NPP) were investigated in relation to some environmental characteristics of the water and sediment of Lake Krishnasayer, an ancient man-made shallow freshwater lake, located at Burdwan, India, between January and December 2003.

The lowest diversity value was observed in the first station in January, 2001. Lake Gölbafli has mesotrophic characteristics due to the seasonal distribution of phytoplanktonic organisms. However, it will be necessary to conduct further physical and chemical analyses of the lake water to obtain more detailed information about the trophic status of the lake.
