  • Menispermaceae is represented by about 70 genera and approximately 520 species. In Vietnam, it is represented by 19 genera, 50 species and two varieties, of which six species are endemic. Most species are dioecious climbers, rarely trees, shrubs, or herbs and distributed in tropical region, sometimes subtropical regions and warm temperate zones.

  • Land cover changes influence the biogeochemistry, hydrology, and climate of the earth. Studies that assessed land cover changes at the global scale mostly focused on: deforestation, cropland expansion, dry land degradation, urbanisation, pasture expansion, and agricultural intensification.

  • Research in tropical forestry is confronted with the task of finding strategies to alleviate pressure on remaining forests, and techniques to enhance forest regeneration and restore abandoned lands, using productive alternatives that can be attractive to local human populations. In addition, sustainable forestry in tropical countries must be supported by adequate policies to promote and maintain specific activities at local and regional scales.

  • Tropical neurology refers to those diseases of the nervous system which prevail between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Warm and humid tropical climates are ideal for growth and multiplication. The diversity and density of flora and fauna, including the human population, is not surprising in this region. Initially the tropical diseases included mainly the infectious and parasitic diseases. Today the world population is close to 5.6 billion and by 2050, is likely to exceed 10 billion; much of this growth is likely to occur in the tropical region....

  • 6 Control over the growth rhythm As explained in Chapter 3, the large majority of branched fruit crops lay down floral buds on resting twigs. In many tropical regions these crops are not exposed to sufficient stress to curb and synchronise shoot growth. As a result they tend to flower and fruit poorly and this aggravates excessive, non-synchronous shoot growth

  • The increasing interest attached to all that part of the American Continent situated within and near the tropics, has suggested the publication of the present edition of Humboldt's celebrated work, as a portion of the SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY. Prior to the travels of Humboldt and Bonpland, the countries described in the following narrative were but imperfectly known to Europeans. For our partial acquaintance with them we were chiefly indebted to the early navigators, and to some of the followers of the Spanish Conquistadores.

  • In this paper, we use the high resolution weather forecast model (HRM), which is able to simulate meso-scale phenomena in limited regions, to predict motion of TCs in the South China Sea in 2002-2004, including two typical weak, slow-moving and unexpected changing TCs Mekhala and Nepartc;tk. Vve have chosen two forecast domains with different areas and resolutions. The results show that with the smaller domain, appropriate buffer and higher resolution HRM can predict better motion of TCs operating in the South China Sea.

  • The Pacific Islands region contains about 200 high islands and about 2 500 low islands and atolls. Apart from the Pitcairn group and the southern part of French Polynesia in the east of the area, all the islands of the area lie in the tropical zone. In general, the islands increase in size from east to west, with Papua New Guinea at the western-most edge of the region having most of the region’s land area. The islands mostly rise steeply from the deep ocean floor and have very little underwater shelf.

  • Natural products are a constant source of potentially active compounds for the treatment of various disorders. The Middle East and tropical regions are believed to have the richest supplies of natural products in the world. Plant derived secondary metabolites have been used by humans to treat acute infections, health disorders and chronic illness for tens of thousands of years. Only during the last 100 years have natural products been largely replaced by synthetic drugs.

  • Zubkov et al. (2000) found that Prochlorococcus spp. were the dominant cyanobacteria in the northern and southern Atlantic gyres and the equatorial region, giving way to Synechococcus spp. in cooler waters. Synechococcus cells also become more numerous and even reach blooming densities near the tropical region affected by the Mauritanian upwelling. Finally, the concentrations of Picoeukaryotes tend to be at their height in temperate waters.

  • In a world where the population is expected to rise to 10 billion by the turn of the century, accelerating urbanisation and the increasing the demand for food and energy; taking action to secure sufficient water of acceptable quality for humans and nature is as urgent as ever. Climate change is projected to aggravate water stress in many regions, especially where water is already scarce and where the demand for water is growing rapidly. Increased frequency of floods is also projected.

  • In addition to visual art, the conference also covered a topic of special interest in visual neuroaesthetics: facial beauty. Other peo- ple’s faces constitute highly relevant stimuli for humans, and face perception is mediated by distributed neural regions (Ishai, 2007), including the extrastriate cortex, which is specially dedicated to processing individual identity, and the superior temporal sulcus, which processes facial movements involved in speech and direct- ing gaze.

  • Natural variations in pH and oxygen status are also important and are not restricted to deep environments. Many groundwaters in tropical regions in weathered basement aquifers and alluvial sequences have low pH, and the reducing conditions which prevail can promote the mobilisation of metals and other parameters of health significance such as arsenic.

  • As a country which contains significant concentrations of population in fragile mountain eco- systems, expanding arid zones, various regions which are subject to periodic flooding, increasing deforestation and environmental degradation and high levels of poverty, Bolivia is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Its damaging impact can be seen in a range of phenomena such as increasingly severe and frequent flooding and landslides and the accelerated melting of tropical glaciers.

  • Forests cover about 30 percent of total land area, but they store about 50 percent of the Earth’s terrestrial carbon (1,150 GtC) in plant biomass, litter and debris, or in the soil. About 20 percent of total GHG emissions are caused by deforestation and land use changes but in tropical regions emissions attributable to land clearance are much higher, up to 40 percent of national totals. Reducing deforestation and degradation (REDD) is the forest mitigation option with the largest potential for maintaining carbon stocks in standing forests over the short term.
