  • In most statistical machine translation systems, the phrase/rule extraction algorithm uses alignments in the 1-best form, which might contain spurious alignment points. The usage of weighted alignment matrices that encode all possible alignments has been shown to generate better phrase tables for phrase-based systems. We propose two algorithms to generate the well known MSD reordering model using weighted alignment matrices.

  • This paper is focused on one aspect of SOPMI, an unsupervised approach to sentiment vocabulary acquisition proposed by Turney (Turney and Littman, 2003). The method, originally applied and evaluated for English, is often used in bootstrapping sentiment lexicons for European languages where no such resources typically exist. In general, SO-PMI values are computed from word co-occurrence frequencies in the neighbourhoods of two small sets of paradigm words. The goal of this work is to investigate how lexeme selection affects the quality of obtained sentiment estimations. ...

  • CLASSICAL GEOMETRY — LECTURE NOTES DANNY CALEGARI 1. A CRASH COURSE IN GROUP THEORY A group is an algebraic object which formalizes the mathematical notion which expresses the intuitive idea of symmetry. We start with an abstract definition. Definition 1.1. A group is a set G and an operation m : G × G → G called multiplication with the following properties: (1) m is associative. That is, for any a, b, c ∈ G, m(a, m(b, c)) = m(m(a, b), c) and the product can be written unambiguously as abc. (2) There is a unique element e ∈ G called the...

  • We discuss the proof of and systematic application of Case’s sum rules for Jacobi matrices. Of special interest is a linear combination of two of his sum rules which has strictly positive terms. Among our results are a complete classification of the spectral measures of all Jacobi matrices J for which J − J0 is Hilbert-Schmidt, and a proof of Nevai’s conjecture that the Szeg˝ condition o holds if J − J0 is trace class.

  • Ten years ago Elsevier published the volume Recent Progress in General Topology. The idea behind that book was to present surveys describing recent developments in most of the primary subfields of General Topology and its applications to Algebra and Analysis. It was our belief that the book could be of help to researchers in General Topology as a background for the development of their own research. There were two similar predecessors, namely, the Handbook of Set-Theoretic Topology (North Holland, Amsterdam 1984, J.E. Vaughan and K. Kunen, eds.

  • Kermit Sigmon, author of the MATLAB® Primer, passed away in January 1997. Kermit was a friend, colleague, and fellow avid bicyclist (although I’m a mere 10-mile-aday commuter) with whom I shared an appreciation for the contribution that MATLAB has made to the mathematics, engineering, and scientific community. MATLAB is a powerful tool, and my hope is that in revising our book for MATLAB 7.0, you will be able to learn how to apply it to solving your own challenging problems in mathematics, science, and engineering....

  • The present book collects most of the courses and seminars delivered at the meeting entitled “ Frontiers in Number Theory, Physics and Geometry”, which took place at the Centre de Physique des Houches in the French Alps, March 9- 21, 2003. It is divided into two volumes. Volume I contains the contributions on three broad topics: Random matrices, Zeta functions and Dynamical systems. The present volume contains sixteen contributions on three themes: Conformal field theories for strings and branes, Discrete groups and automorphic forms and finally, Hopf algebras and renormalization....

  • Vector and matrix concepts have proved indispensable in the development of the subject of dynamics. The formulation of the equations of motion using the Newtonian or Lagrangian approach leads to a set of second-order simultaneous differential equations. For convenience, these equations are often expressed in vector and matrix forms. Vector and matrix identities can be utilized to provide much less cumbersome proofs of many of the kinematic and dynamic relationships. In this chapter, the mathematical tools required to understand the development presented in this book are discussed briefly.

  • We propose an O(M(n2)) time algorithm for the recognition of Tree Adjoining Languages (TALs), where n is the size of the input string and M(k) is the time needed to multiply two k x k boolean matrices. Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAGs) are formalisms suitable for natural language processing and have received enormous attention in the past among not only natural language processing researchers but also algorithms designers. The first polynomial time algorithm for TAL parsing was proposed in 1986 and had a run time of O(n6). has been proposed. ...
