  • The quantitative independent variables used in regression equations, which usually take values over some continuous range. Frequently, one may wish to include the quality independent variables, often called dummy variables, in the regression model in order to (i) capture the presence or absence of a ‘quality’, such as male or female, poor or rich, urban or rural areas, college degree or do not college degree, different stages of development, different period of time; (ii) to capture the interaction between them; and, (iii) or to take on one or more distinct values. ...

  • This chapter is of an introductory nature, its purpose being to indicate some concepts and results from the theory of probability which are used in later chapters . Most of these are contained in Chapters 1-9 of Gnedenko [47], and will therefore be cited without proof. The first section is somewhat isolated, and contains a series of results from the foundations of the theory of probability. A detailed account may be found in [76], or in Chapter I of [31] . Some of these will not be needed in the first part of the book, in which attention is confined to independent random variables ....

  • AN INQUIRY ll’TO THE EFFECTS OF PERSONALITY VARIABLES ON THE ECONOMIC RETURN TO EDUCATION The potential efficiency-enhancing effects of increased Tiebout choice operate through the assumption that parents prefer schools with j μ -promoting policies. To the extent that this is true, Tiebout choice induces a positive correlation between j μ and j x , since high- i x families will outbid lower- i x families for homes near the most preferred schools.

  • We consider a semi-supervised setting for domain adaptation where only unlabeled data is available for the target domain. One way to tackle this problem is to train a generative model with latent variables on the mixture of data from the source and target domains. Such a model would cluster features in both domains and ensure that at least some of the latent variables are predictive of the label on the source domain.

  • The present paper describes a robust approach for abbreviating terms. First, in order to incorporate non-local information into abbreviation generation tasks, we present both implicit and explicit solutions: the latent variable model, or alternatively, the label encoding approach with global information. Although the two approaches compete with one another, we demonstrate that these approaches are also complementary. By combining these two approaches, experiments revealed that the proposed abbreviation generator achieved the best results for both the Chinese and English languages. ...

  • Large-scale discriminative machine translation promises to further the state-of-the-art, but has failed to deliver convincing gains over current heuristic frequency count systems. We argue that a principle reason for this failure is not dealing with multiple, equivalent translations. We present a translation model which models derivations as a latent variable, in both training and decoding, and is fully discriminative and globally optimised. Results show that accounting for multiple derivations does indeed improve performance.

  • This paper presents a multi-neuro tagger that uses variable lengths of contexts and weighted inputs (with information gains) for part of speech tagging. Computer experiments show that it has a correct rate of over 94% for tagging ambiguous words when a small Thai corpus with 22,311 ambiguous words is used for training. This result is better than any of the results obtained using the single-neuro taggers with fixed but different lengths of contexts, which indicates that the multi-neuro tagger can dynamically find a suitable length of contexts in tagging. ...

  • Combinatory Categorial Grammars, CCGs, (Steedman 1985) have been shown by Weir and loshi (1988) to generate the same class of languages as Tree-Adjoining Grammars (TAG), Head Grammars (HG), and Linear Indexed Grammars (LIG). In this paper, I will discuss the effect of using variables in lexical category assignments in CCGs. It will be shown that using variables in lexical categories can increase the weak generative capacity of CCGs beyond the class of grammars listed above.
