Semantic extraction from images is a topical problem and is applied in many different semantic retrieval systems. In this paper, a method of image semantic retrieval is proposed based on a set of images similar to the input image. Since then, the semantics of the image are queried on the ontology by the visual word vector.

The objective of my research is to develop a body of work for exhibition based on an examination of the ways that corporate space, as exemplified by the foyers and conference rooms of contemporary corporate offices, reflect societal anxieties about wealth and power. This paper delves into the realms of tragedy, memory and representation. Drawing upon the phenomenon of the Phantom Limb and extending it towards a theory of Phantom Bodies, various artworks - literary, theatrical and visual - are examined. After the conflagration of the terrorist attack, how are these absences grieved over and remembered through artistic representation? The essay examines this question by positioning itself amongst the scarred landscapes of post-September 11 New York and suicide bombings in Israel (2000-2006).

3D animation software is extensively used to create graphics for special effects sequences in live-action films, in animated feature film production and for the generation of computer games and virtual reality content. It is a commonly held view within the computer graphics community that 3D animation software is ―just another tool‖ for self-expression. This research questions that view by examining the inherent nature of the tool itself. In doing so, some of the philosophical assumptions embedded in the design of the new digital tool are revealed.

The aim of the research was the processing of the vibration signatures from healthy and damaged composite beams acquired with the help of a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV) upon excitation and analysis of the mode shapes acquired for damage detection. This research is a visual inquiry into the fashions in 20th century kimono in which I have tried to take into account meaning and interpretation rather than a simple chronology of change. There is minimal information in English about kimono fashions during the 20th century, which has led to the assumption that kimono is now a traditional form of dress and not subject to style change.

It can be a challenge for women to purchase a suitable pair of dress shoes that is visually pleasing, functional and appropriate for a work environment. This research project investigated the availability of suitable dress footwear for working women within the Australian market.

This search resulted in the development of a practical software tool based on animated Venn diagrams (Dvenn) that attempted to exploit the inherent human ability to perceive quantities visually, a faculty described herein as visual numeracy. The exploitation of this faculty is considered here to be a valuable aid for group understanding of business presentation data. The development of the tool was an essential part of the research that was undertaken and the resulting software forms a significant portion of this practise based research.

This research project will investigate how combining systems of tessellation1 , modularity2 and seriality3 can be utilised with a specific method of paper staining to explore visual pathways within an artwork. A serial system4 of modular tessellation will be implemented, whereby different “sets” of oil-and-pigment soaked paper modules will be constructed and formed into various configurations.
